We are honored and very fortunate to be the recipient of this year’s Angels Project!

The CSA Angels Project began in 2006, and as a part of this year’s 52nd National Symposium, we will be working with the Historic Rosedale in Charlotte, North Carolina. It blends deep regional history with an active commitment to preservation and education.

Centered around a 1815 house and historic grounds, Rosedale serves as a “museum, an educational center, and an urban retreat,” and its staff is eager for guidance as they work to strengthen the care of their costume and textile collection.

CSA volunteers will assist the staff at Historic Rosedale with collections preservation work, while learning more about this important historic house and its collections.

Volunteers at this year’s National Symposium will assist with photographing, inventorying, folding, rehousing, and preparing items for improved storage and, in some cases, future exhibitions.

Spring has fully sprung, and Rosedale is in full bloom!  Among the historic plants and trees on our grounds are these red mulberries, thought to be descended from those planted by Dr. David Caldwell in the mid-1800s.  It was Dr. Caldwell's thought to tap into the lucrative silk trade by raising silkworms on the site, and to that end, planted numerous mulberry trees to feed them.  Unfortunately for Dr Caldwell, however, silkworms prefer white mulberries, and those he planted turned out to be red.  The silk experiment failed, but the mulberry trees are still here, producing beautiful red berries every spring that are greatly enjoyed by Rosedale's resident birds!  Visit us for a garden or guided house tour (tickets can be purchased at https://www.historicrosedale.org/), and come see these and many others of our historic trees!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. At Historic Rosedale, we reflect on the sacrifices made by those in service, including Army 1st Lt. Jo Graham Davidson, Jr.  The cousin of Rosedale’s last residents Mary Louise Davidson and Alice Davidson Able, Lt. Davidson was killed during World War II when his plane was brought down in 1943. We remember with great gratitude the selfless actions of Lt. Davidson and all servicemen and women that shaped the freedoms we hold today.

Unearthing history, one trowel at a time. Our gardeners at Historic Rosedale are constantly uncovering 19th‑century and early 20th-century artifacts hidden just beneath the soil — fragments of glass bottles, hand‑forged nails, and everyday objects such as this spoon and lighter that once lived alongside the families who called this place home. Stay tuned as we discover more historic items and piece together these stories from the ground up!
