Fourteen Exhibits plus a great Gift Shop. Walk-ins welcome! In fact, Samuel Champlain made landfall in Chatham in 1606! Lincoln gallery, and much more.

In 1923, a group of citizens founded the Chatham Historical Society to preserve the history of Chatham, one of Cape Cod's earliest fishing villages. There is a stone marker commemorating this event near Stage Harbor. The Society's headquarters is the Atwood Museum complex featuring the historic home owned by Captain Joseph Atwood which was built in 1752. The institution also features a comprehensive archives & research facility, Chatham fishing gallery, Stallknecht Mural Barn, Joseph C.

Join us for an engaging evening with Linda Coombs, who will explore the history, traditions, and enduring connection of the Wampanoag people to Cape Cod and their homeland.
Linda will discuss Wampanoag origin histories and the thousands of years they have lived on the Cape and throughout their homeland. She will also share insights into their traditional way of life and the ways Wampanoag communities lived in relationship with—and in harmony with—the environment, sustaining the earth and its natural systems for generations.

Aubade Wind Trio brings together three highly accomplished musicians performing on flute, oboe, and clarinet. Though the trio formed in 2025, each musician brings decades of experience performing locally and nationwide—and their successful debut at the Cape Cod Museum of Art was just the beginning.

✨ Meet the musicians:

Carl Gutkowski, flute — A flutist with 30 years of experience, Carl is a National Flute Association competition winner, a finalist in the Boulder Bach Festival’s International Bach Competition, and a regular performer at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

Monika Veress, clarinet — A familiar and beloved musician throughout Cape Cod, Monika won the Cape Symphony Concerto Competition and performs extensively on the Cape and beyond. She also serves as Operations Manager for the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival.

Zachary Pulse, oboe — Based in Beacon, NY, Zachary holds a DMA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and performs with the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Q in Queens, and the Caroga Arts Ensemble.

What can Chatham’s cemeteries tell us about the people who came before us?

Join us at the Atwood Museum on October 24 at 2 PM for Where Memory Lives, a special fall event exploring historic cemeteries, funerary customs, gravestone art, and the ways Cape Codders have remembered their loved ones through the centuries.

Executive Director Liz Rabideau will share stories and history from Chatham and beyond, followed by an opportunity to explore our new Where Memory Lives pop-up exhibit featuring rarely displayed artifacts and records from the Chatham Historical Society’s collection.

We’ll have c***r, donuts, and fall treats, too!

Afterward, guests are invited to join museum staff at Union Cemetery for a guided walk exploring historic gravestones and the stories of notable Chatham residents.
