Some real progress over the weekend! Stand is conceptually done as are the 2 smallmouth buffalo that will accompany the gar. Lots of "real" welding, grinding, sandblasting, priming and painting still ahead... but it's always cool to see something in your mind actually take shape!

Wow... it's been a while that I've posted. This winter has been a bit uncomfortable to work in an unheated shop! I did get some work done on a bumper carrier to hold my beach cart. Hoping to shark fish from the vehicle this year! But, i am chomping at the bit to get back to the gator gar! Maybe this weekend!

Finally some fins! This is the last of the "major" work on the gar.... there will be a ton more welding to fill gaps and fully secure the fins... but it at least looks the way i want! Next will be working on the stand and some accent pieces... then of to prep and paint. Not sure when i will get back to it, but i feel it's in a good place right now.

With the front end looking proper, it's time to work the back side. It always amazes me how tough these chromed tail pipes can be...i had to slit the outer shell and it still took the old heavy vise and a cheater pipe to force the edges together. I do appreciate the old heavy vises...i would fear snapping the newer ones...irrational though it might be. The final touch is the flare on the top portion as gar have heterocercal caudals...the backbone and fleshy part around it do not end evenly at the tail. Similar to other ancient fishes like paddlefish and sturgeon... or more ancient cartilaginous fishes like sharks.

Time for the tooth fairy! For the larger teeth, i hand ground small rod steel.... for the inside upper jaw and lower outer jaw i used nails that i just kept cutting pieces off of and sharpening... I'm a bit of a metal miser sometimes!! I also spent some serious time crushing the upper jaw flatter and giving it a bit of curl at the tip to better resemble an alligator gar.

ALLIGATOR GAR, Post #2.
So, cut the satellite dish receiver bar in two...the flare is what made me think "gar jaw!" I tacked it to the motorcycle pipe and at first thought, that looks good.... but the more i looked, the less i liked it. It was too clunky to be a set of gar jaws... next post i get into reworking the jaws and giving this fish some chompers!

Wow... it's been a hot minute since i posted any projects. I have been busy with other priorities, but am back at it. My plan is for a multi-post about an ongoing project. This is going to be an alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula)to hopefully be auctioned to raise money for research into these incredible animals! My first pic is, well, the beginning pieces that i envisioned becoming the gar... I'm going for one about 48" in length.
