There are plenty of fun things happening in northern Minnesota this time of year (ahem, ahem, check out our upcoming Night of Discovery gala), but there are also cool things happening in southern Minnesota—like the Minnesota State Fair! 🎡🌲🌽🎉
When we saw this post, we just had to share it. Did you know? Drill cores, like the ones on display at the DNR's “Core Shack” (located in the DNR building at the Minnesota State Fair), contain vital insights into Minnesota’s geologic past. Information gleaned from drill cores contributes to MDC’s geology, paleontology, and archaeology programming, and drill core data was referenced throughout the research that went into our newly renovated Hall of Geology. 🪨⛏️
If you’re going to the Minnesota State Fair this weekend, be sure to visit the DNR building and check out the “Core Shack”! If you’re up north, you can see drill cores at the DNR’s Drill Core Library in Hibbing (it’s open to the public, schedule a visit using the information at the link below), and you can learn about how our region’s namesake iron ore was formed here at MDC here in our Hall of Geology. 🦕🦴
In the meantime, have a happy, safe, educational weekend, everyone! 😁
