The mission and motivation behind HEDGE Gallery is to present a vehicle for elevating accessibility to the arts and to continue creative collaboration with surrounding communities and businesses in Ohio and beyond. We are located in the 78th Street Studios arts complex, and is owned and operated by Hilary Gent, who has spent the last ten years staging public exhibits, launching art walks, and plan

ning elaborate receptions for individuals and organizations, all of which have transformed the way residents and visitors view Northeast Ohio. The Gallery represents the freshest contemporary art in this region, with a roster of 18 established artists who are diverse in technique and style. Hilary Gent specializes in curating compelling artwork into off-site spaces such as offices, hotels, and homes, and can be hired for art delivery and installation services. Many of our represented artists can be hired to work n commission projects as well.

“Seen together, ‘I Am An Old Woman Playlist’ and ‘A Library of Selves’ offer a provocative meditation on the experience of women aging in our society, expressed through song lyrics, graphite-rendered wrinkles, beloved novels, and quiet silk serenities. By integrating materials such as screenprinting, monoprinting, paint, and hand-dyed textiles, the two artists create a rich visual vocabulary for exploring what remains as life’s great loves, losses, and griefs accumulate. Together, their work becomes a generative and deeply honest testament to the resilience, complexity, and enduring power of the female spirit.”

As Dolly Parton says, “I ain’t got time to be old.” Neither did my grandma.

Liz Maugans’ current exhibition is largely autobiographical and also inspired by music. Read Liz’ blurb about this piece below

“My grandma MaryJane Shaw married at fifteen. A farmer’s daughter, then a farmer’s wife, she lived all 87 years on the same farm. She raised five children, had sixteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and worked her tail off.

She farmed, gardened, canned, cooked, quilted, crocheted, and took a second job at Rutters to help send my mom—the first in their family—to college. Making things by hand wasn’t a hobby. It was survival, love, and labor. Nothing was wasted- every scrap, piece of twine, and almost every material was used for something purposeful. They were also proud of the well-crafted and beautiful things they could make for their quality of life. 

It takes on average five to eight hours to crochet a ten-inch doily. These doilies have been passed down through my family and some have been thrifted. Doilies are useful and protect sofas and chairs from hair oil and are also made for wood furniture as a barrier for water stains and wear and tear.  

Maybe that’s what women have always done. Made something beautiful from what they had. Held things together. Kept going.

Our new exhibitions “A Library of Selves” and “I Am An Old Woman Playlist” featuring recent projects by artists Rebecca Cross and Liz Maugans had an incredible response last week! We are still reeling in the wonderful energy these women have brought to the Gallery!

Their stunning new work is on view through September 25.

HEDGE Gallery is thrilled to present a dual exhibition featuring two intersecting bodies of work that explore the terrain of memory, identity, and the radical act of aging. Combining A Library of Selves and I Am An Old Woman Playlist, these exhibitions offer an evocative look at the artists’ evolution through self-portraiture and textiles by Rebecca Cross and print based media collage by Liz Maugans.
