WHO'S WHO? Can we get your help in identifying these Cotuit folks? We believe these photos were taken when real-estate agent Phyllis Dudley spearheaded a huge "community remembrance project," likely in the 1970s. Hard to believe they're already a half-century old! These images are among the few that weren't ID'd (except for the first one, which is of Phyllis and her dog, Laska, outside the Dudley & Kerr Real Estate office on School Street, where most of the images were shot. We'll appreciate your insights!

Last Thursday's Valentine’s High Tea was a smashing success. The program began with our curator, Cindy Nickerson, who delighted guests by showcasing our lovely collection of archived Victorian fans. As it turns out, these elegant accessories were far more than decorative — they were a subtle form of nonverbal communication used by the fairer s*x to convey their innermost thoughts to attentive gentlemen. A Victorian emoji, if you will.

The afternoon continued with two engaging talks on “Love, Cotuit Style,” given by Nancy McCartin and Molly DeMello. Each offered a charming glimpse into romance as it unfolded here at home, reminding us that matters of the heart have always been very much alive in our village.

The program was followed by a proper high tea, complete with freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, and sweet treats — the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon devoted to love, history, and community.

Such a lovely time was had by all. So much so, that we’ve decided to make it a “tea-dition.” Keep an eye out for our next High Tea, brewing just in time for Mother’s Day. ☕💐

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Isn’t it lovely to start the year off with not only a clean slate but a blanket of fresh white snow? Cotuit’s first resident doctor, Dr. Solomon Haskins, was inspired to take this photo of his Queen Anne-style house (at what’s now 134 Ocean View Ave.) under similar conditions. He had a medical practice in Cotuit from 1896 until his death in 1928. The windmill behind his house was a style of water pump called a “weathercock,” efficient enough to pump water from a well up to a home’s second floor. Quite a few of Cotuit’s more affluent residents had them in the early 1900s, before the Fire District began drilling public wells in 1936. Dr. Haskins had a picturesque octagonal tower constructed around his, including a lookout platform at the top.
