The low rock formation, shaped by the elements over millennia, stands as a symbol of hardiness and solitude. Through the medium of oil, I sought to convey the muted, earthy tones of the rocks and the vibrant, ever-changing hues of the desert sky. The interplay of light and shadow on the rugged surfaces reveals a spectrum of colors that are both intense and subtle, embodying the desert’s tranquil power and delicate intricacy. "This painting had a life of its own from start to finish. My original idea was to emphasize the movement of my subject. After completing the underpainting and the initial drawing I rolled out a fixative with a brayer to preserve this layer. The roller to my surprise picked up and repeated my drawing all over the background. To me these marks looked like petroglyphs. I decided to run with it and added some more giving the whole painting an added dimension. The blue areas surrounding the Indian and the horse help show movement through space and time."
