Field Research Ranger Program and Resources In Science Education Participant

RISE organizations and the Department of Secondary Education have created a unique program to support science standards-based classroom instruction with the intention of strengthening the learning community and getting families involved in outdoor learning. This is an on-going initiative that will be available, free of charge, to all participating students in Palm Beach County. Sandoway House is a proud participant and excited to partner with the Palm Beach County School District on this fun and engaging STEM-based learning activity! Students will be encouraged to visit various RISE organizations to participate in engaging STEM-based learning activities that will focus on specific science standards of the School District of Palm Beach County. Students will utilize a passport booklet (provided by the Department of Secondary Education) that will be stamped at each organization to signify the completion of their learning activity. c. Students turn in their stamped passport booklet signifying the completion of all designated RISE learning activities to receive a certificate of completion and an embroidered badge from the School District of Palm Beach County officially certifying them as a “Field Research Ranger.”

Certificates and badges will be awarded as students complete their RISE adventure. There is no time limit for the certification process, and all K- students in Palm Beach County are encouraged to participate. POV: You are being hunted by a tiny striped missile. 🦨💨

Every morning, Reggie the skunk plays a game where he chases us — and when he catches us, he gets a treat. It may look like pure chaos, but this is actually an important part of his care!

Skunks in human care need more than food and a cozy place to sleep. They need movement, mental stimulation, training, enrichment, and positive relationships with their caretakers. This kind of play helps Reggie:

🦨 Get healthy exercise
🧠 Use his brain and problem-solving skills
🤝 Build trust with his animal care team
🎯 Practice recall and training behaviors
💛 Stay active, engaged, and confident

Reggie may be non-releasable, but that doesn’t mean his life should be boring. Enrichment like this helps him stay physically and mentally healthy — and yes, sometimes it means we become the enrichment. 😂

Come meet Reggie and learn more about the rescued animal ambassadors who call Sandoway home!

Sandoway will be closed today, Tuesday, May 12, and tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13, while we complete some important maintenance around the center.

Thank you so much for your understanding as we take care of a few updates to keep Sandoway safe, welcoming, and ready for more wild encounters. 💙

We can’t wait to welcome you back on Thursday, May 14!

We’re incredibly honored to share that Sandoway Discovery Center has received the 2026 Historic Preservation Board Award from the City of Delray Beach!

Our nature center is more than a place to meet rescued wildlife and explore coastal ecosystems — it’s also housed within one of Delray Beach’s historic homes. Preserving this beautiful property means preserving a piece of our community’s story, and we are proud to continue sharing that history with every guest who walks through our doors.

From the architecture and grounds to the stories of Old Florida that still echo through the property, this house is a living connection between nature, education, and local heritage.

Come explore our special historic exhibit, walk the grounds, and experience how history and conservation come together at Sandoway. 💙🌿🏡

Thank you to the City of Delray Beach Historic Preservation Board for this meaningful recognition — and thank you to our supporters, members, volunteers, and visitors who help keep this historic treasure thriving for future generations.

Sometimes evolution creates elegance.
Sometimes evolution creates… whatever this guy is doing. 😂🐸

Meet two very different amphibian personalities at Sandoway Discovery Center:

✨ Poison dart frog: tiny rainforest royalty, posing like he pays the mortgage.
🤦‍♀️ Banded bullfrog: built like a potato with legs and absolutely zero concern for dignity.

One enters like: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius.”
The other: “my name is jeff.” 💀

Fun fact: Poison dart frogs are known for their bright warning colors, while banded bullfrogs are more “sit still and hope nobody notices me” energy… although ours clearly missed that memo.

This very vocal girl is an American kestrel, and she has quite the story. 💛
Hei Hei was kept as an illegal pet before being rescued and brought to Peace River Wildlife Center, where she received lifesaving care—including surgery to remove one of her eyes.

Because of her injury and history in captivity, she can’t survive in the wild… but she can thrive as an ambassador—reminding people why wild animals belong in the wild.

And every morning? She comes up to the office for a change of scenery… and to make sure we don’t forget she’s there. 🗣️

Loud. Opinionated. Full of personality.
We wouldn’t have her any other way.

👉 Wild animals are NOT pets.
👉 Rescues like Hei Hei deserve safe, permanent homes.

Come meet her (and hear her 😆) at Sandoway!

🔧🐾 Just a little glow-up in progress!

Sandoway will be closed May 12–13 while we take care of some important maintenance to keep our space (and our animal homes!) in top shape. 🛠️💙

We appreciate your understanding as we make things even better for our guests—both human and wild!

✨ We can’t wait to welcome you back on May 14 for more amazing animal encounters.

Thanks for your support, and see you soon!

Who says enrichment can’t be FUN? 😄

At Sandoway, keeping our animals healthy isn’t just about food and clean habitats—it’s about keeping their minds active too. That’s where enrichment comes in!

Reggie the skunk is a natural forager, meaning in the wild he’d spend a LOT of time sniffing, digging, and searching for food. So instead of just handing him his snacks, we turn it into a game 🎯

This simple (but genius) toy—a modified wiffle ball with just one opening—gets Reggie rolling, sniffing, and problem-solving to earn his treats. It’s exercise, mental stimulation, and play all in one!

💡 Fun fact: Skunks have an incredible sense of smell and strong front claws designed for digging, so enrichment like this taps right into their natural instincts.

Because a busy skunk is a happy skunk 🖤
