An update on the big changes coming to Dexter Historical Society's Gordon Hall. Pictured are some of the workers who have helped us move everything out of the hall to prepare to go back to the original layout in the 1860s. This has been our plan since 2006 when we acquired the hall and we are now ready for the workers to begin the transformation! We are still in need of funding and welcome donations to help us. Please go to our website: www.DexterHistory.org to donate.

DAHS participated in Light Up Dexter, our community's celebration of the season, by decorating a Christmas tree in traditional fashion with popcorn, cranberries, and old-style ornaments. What a beautiful sight all those trees and lights make in our downtown area!

Dexter Heritage Guild Annual Holiday Bazaar
Saturday, December 6 from 9am-3pm
There will be a wide variety of handcrafted items: ornaments, pillows, wreaths, kitchen accessories, a variety of holiday décor, and beautiful apparel. We will also sell our popular themed gift baskets. There will be drawings for special items: a gift certificate for a restaurant and a show, two gently used American Girl dolls, and more. Winners will be selected at 2pm but need not be present to win. There will also be a Bake Sale, featuring a variety of baked and canned goods. The success of the Bake Sale will be determined by people donating items for the sale. The museum will be open on Friday, December 5th from 8:30am to 3pm. We hope you will donate some of your delicious baked goods! For more treasures, the Museum’s gift shop will also be open. If you have any questions, send them to [email protected].

It’s the day after Halloween.
All your little witches and goblins have come and gone,
but you still have Halloween candy!
What to do?
Donate your Halloween candy!

You can donate your leftover Halloween candy to the Dexter Area Historical Society! Here, it will find a new home as decoration for a child’s gingerbread house during Christmas at the Mansion.

What we can accept: Please no chocolate - too messy in little fingers. But most other kinds of popular candy can be made to work.

How to donate: Bring your candy to the Dexter Area Museum 3443 Inverness in Dexter. You will see a large box on the porch labeled for candy. You can drop it there and it will be collected daily.

Thank you so much!

If you are interested in attending any of the Christmas at the Mansion events, check our website for details: www.dexterhistory.org.

DAHS Presents Diane Hall - Hats Through the Ages
October 19, 2025 2 - 4 pm Dexter Area Museum
3443 Inverness, Dexter, Michigan 48130

They call Diane Hall the Hat Lady. From an early age, she appreciated hats with fine fabric, shapes and accessories. As a child she remembers playing with hats and later in life she loved wearing them and designing clothes to match her hats.

Diane’s talk will begin after a brief Annual Meeting of the Dexter Area Historical Society. Light refreshments will be served and the display area of the Museum will be open. There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome! For questions, email [email protected].

On this day, Diane will talk about the history of hats and their purposes, from the traces of headwear found in ancient grave sites, to later when hats were worn by members of the upper class, to today’s hats. Diane will bring samples from her extensive hat collection to highlight her talk and inspire her audience.
Diane says "To me rescuing and wearing these hats is a way of paying respect to the people who wore them and their way of life. We owe them a share of gratitude for our forebears." Her favorites are the elegant hats worn by actresses in classic movies and she loves that elaborate hats are coming back for many special events.
