Black Skimmer - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, TX, USA - Sept '26

I went to the refuge in search of the many Wood Storks reported, only to find Black Skimmers in abundance and no Storks. The light was low, soft, and dull. This Skimmer had just sn**ched a fish from the water. They drop their longer lower jaw or mandible in the water and "skim." When they feel prey the heads goes very quickly down and backwards to sn**ch the prey. We see this bird just recovering from that move bringing it's head back forward with a fish. This is not a real showpiece but, given the conditions, I still like it. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 200mm, 1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 10000.

Lotus Blossom and Bees - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, TX, USA - Sept. '26

My local photo club's September photo theme was insects. While at the boardwalk at the refuge, I found these hungry honey bees working on a beautiful flower. It was voted best pix of the month by the members present. It is not my usual birds, but I do like it a lot. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 481mm, f/8, 1/8000, ISO 5000. Exposure was due to total lack of attention to the camera side and 100% attention to the tiny subjects. Cheers.

Long-bill Dowitcher - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR, Anahuac, TX, USA - Aug. 26
Many times I may "see" and image as B&W in the field. More often, I get it home and see the B&W potential in the digital darkroom. This one was the latter. I just love the contrast and action in this image. Let me know your thoughts. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @400 mm, 1/1250, f/7.1, ISO 1600. PS: find the dragon.

Yellow Crowned Night Heron (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR, Anahuac, Texas, USA - Aug. 26
This Night Heron is likely another juvenile from this spring's hatch. They seem to be very hardy birds on the whole. These herons go to work feeding themselves from very early on. This one was concentrating so hard it did not give any indications that he even saw me. I love the focused stare looking for the next minnow. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 800mm, 1/1250, f/9.0, ISO 1600.

Black-necked Stilt (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac Texas, USA - Aug. '26

One thing about the late summer here in SE Texas is that we begin to see the the grown up young of many of the spring hatches. In this case this less than black-neck stilt, is one of those youngsters. This one just caught my eye with its one legged pose. You can just see the foot of the other leg if if you look close. As luck would have it, the dragon fly just happened to be in the frame. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 707mm, 1/3200, f/9.0, ISO 2000.

Purple Gallinule (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Texas, USA - Aug 2026

My friend Cecil and I were at the refuge just after sunrise and I was first confused by this bird. I wondered if it was a Sora Rail but alas, it concluded it was a juvenile, likely this year's hatch, Purple Gallinule. I learn something new each trip in the field. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 800mm, 1/3200, f/9.0, ISO 2000.

American Alligator (young) Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Texas, USA.

One thing about this time of year is that the gators are usually out in force. I love when the soft colors and smoothness of the morning light on the water contrast with the eye and texture of the gator. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/1600, f/9.0, ISO 1600.

Kildeer (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Tx, USA - Aug 2026
We were out a bit later in the morning at the refuge. This is the time of year when we see a lot of juvenile birds from this spring's hatch. The mottled back and thin neck ring are some tells for this little youngster. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/1600, f/9.0, ISO 1600.

Eastern Kingbird - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR, Anahuac, TX - Aug 16 2026
This is my first taken and processed image since the loss of my dear wife Dana Paulissen. The Eastern Kingbird was extremely cooperative and let me get a series of images. I like this one with the fanned tail. I hope you enjoy. For those who wonder if the EF 200-800 is a sharp and versatile wildlife lens, the proof is in the pudding for me. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/2500, f/7.3, ISO 2000. See less

Brown Pelican - Galveston Island, Texas, USA
I was leading a field trip called "Birds in Flight from a Boat" for our local birding and bird photography festival. The weather was overcast during this scouting trip the day before classes. I love how brilliantly Pelicans use ground effect to just glide so close to the surface of the water. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, f/7.0, 1/2500, ISO 4000.
