MYERS TO SPEAK THURSDAY ON THE BATTLE OF SHILOH

The final lecture of four celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary will be held at 7 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 15, as part of the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum’s 2026 season.

Bob Myers, semi-retired from the Historical Society of Michigan, will speak on “The Worst Colonel I Ever Saw: Francis Quinn and the Battle of Shiloh.”

The event will be in the community room of the Edwardsburg Branch of the Cass District Library. It is co-sponsored by the museum and the Uptown Improvement Association in partnership with the library.

The lecture’s subject, Col. Francis Quinn, was from Niles and led the 12th Michigan Infantry into action in the Battle of Shiloh, and Mich. Gov. Austin Blair said Quinn was “The worst colonel I ever saw.” Myers will follow Quinn and the command through one of the Civil War’s deadliest battles.

Myers became semi-retired this year, after nine years with the HSM where he directed education and historical programming. Previously, he was the longtime curator for the Berrien County Historical Association in Berrien Springs. He has authored several books and written articles for the HSM magazines. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Alma College and Western Michigan University, respectively.

SUPPORT THE MUSEUM AT FLAT ROCK GRILL ON OCT. 7

Join friends of the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum for a fundraiser at the Flat Rock Grill on Wed., Oct. 7.

The restaurant’s management will donate 20 percent of the guest checks generated that day by supporters of the museum’s mission.

The event will run all day long. Patrons must let their waiter/waitress know that they are there to support the museum’s efforts.

Gift cards purchased on that day will also count towards the restaurant’s 20 per cent donation.

The museum is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization as established under the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

C***r, Candles, and More at Sauk Trail Fest on Saturday

Four reenactors in period attire will operate a vintage c***r press at the Sauk Trail Festival Sat., Sept. 26, so apple c***r lovers can enjoy freshly made c***r. The reenactors, from the Michindoh Conference Center in Hillsdale, will also demonstrate candlemaking and make rope belts and God's Eye craft from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum on Main Street, Edwardsburg.

The festival's second year spans 1775-1875 to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary. The event will feature at least 18 reenactors, period music by the Lawless Jam, speakers, cannoneers, and a children's archaeological dig.

Festival attendees can ride the Voyageur Canoe at Pleasant Lake. The 35-foot replica of canoes used by early fur traders is owned by the Sarett Nature Center in Benton Harbor.

The event is free, and food trucks will be on site.

VOYAGEUR CANOE TO BE AT SAUK TRAIL FEST

The Sarett Nature Center’s Voyageur canoe will be at Pleasant Lake on Sat., Sept. 26, to give rides to attendees at the Sauk Trail Festival at the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum on Main Street. The canoe is a 35-foot replica of one used in the 1600s in the fur trade.

The festival will be held on museum grounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature several reenactors, speakers, music, an archaeological dig, crafts, and children’s activities.

The event is free, and food trucks will be on site.

LAWLESS JAM WILL ‘JAM’ AT THE SAUK TRAIL FEST

Four members of the open group, Lawless Jam, featuring the guitar, Appalachian dulcimer, banjo, and fiddle, will perform from noon to 1 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 26, at the Sauk Trail Festival.

The festival spans 1775-1875, in celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary, and will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum on Main Street in Edwardsburg.

The Lawless Jam emerged in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when musicians from around Michiana began jamming outdoors at the Dr. T.K. Lawless County Park near Vandalia. Since then, the group has played at the Cass County Historical Society’s Harvest Festival at Newton Woods; the Underground Railroad Days; and the Cass County Fair. Members jam from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Cass County Council on Aging, Cassopolis.

Songs to be performed were either written during the Civil War or popular at that time. The exception will be “Ashokan Farewell,” the title theme of Ken Burns’ 1990 documentary series, “The Civil War,” on PBS Television.

Among the selections will be “Soldiers’ Joy,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “John Brown’s Body,” “Battle Cry of Freedom,” “Rally Round the Flag,” and “Johnny Comes Marching Home.”

The festival is free of charge. Food trucks will be on site.
