In the Shade of the Witness Tree
After the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge on September 3, 1777, George Washington assigned Captain Robert Kirkwood – hero namesake of the busy highway – to find a meeting site for a war council on September 6. He found the Hale-Byrnes House near Stanton, built in 1750 by potter Samuel Hale and later sold to miller Daniel Byrnes. This Charles Colombo painting focuses on the site’s old sycamore called “The George Washington Witness Tree,” where he sat in the shade as the meeting room was aired. The Marquis de Lafayette attended the meeting held on his 20th birthday. Public outcry saved the historic building from razing for road-widening in the 1960s.

PERRYVILLE LIBRARY PROGRAM
SEPT. 15, 2026 @ 6:00 p.m.

To honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11, local officials will convene for a moderated discussion led by Mike Dixon to preserve the community's unique history of leadership and public safety. Attendees are invited to hear these firsthand reflections and share their own memories of the day that fundamentally reshaped our nation’s security.
