Thank you to everyone who stopped by KD Art Center during First Friday! It was so nice to connect with the community and show a little bit of what we have going on at Florence Arts and Museums! So many people contributed by making stepping stones to go in the garden behind KD Art Center. Our Museum Educator, Ana, was also there with scratch art to share about this year's Dรญa de los Mu***os Celebration, which will be happening this fall at Southall House. We look forward to sharing more about how the event will be expanding as the Fall season gets nearer.

First Friday at FAM!
KD Art Center will be open late for First Friday tonight from 4:30-7:30pm! FAM staff will be here to share about upcoming events & summer camps - and we are planning some fun community projects, too! Help us create stepping stones for a path in front of our temporary mural and garden. The stepping stones we make together with our community will be placed to view and enjoy for years to come!
We hope youโ€™ll stop by and see us!

Right now in the Learning Room at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, we are inviting visitors to contribute to a 'Community Craft Quilt'!
Get inspired by the current quilt exhibit, "Threading the Past," and create your own quilt square using soft foam paper, scissors, and glue. We will add your square to a 'quilt' made entirely by community members and museum visitors! This project is perfect for adults and children - so bring your whole family to KDAC, check out the current exhibits, and get crafty! This project will be ongoing until the exhibit ends March 8th.
We will see you soon!

For their April 2026 meeting, Quad Cities Photography Club welcomes back Chris Baker. Chris Baker is a Huntsville resident and avid photographer who enjoys experimenting with all genres of photography. He is an active member of the Huntsville Photographic Society and loves sharing his knowledge and experiences with others. During the day, Chris is an engineer working for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The last time Chris was here, he gave a presentation on post-processing in Lightroom Classic. For this meeting, Chris will follow up on that presentation with a talk about "Advanced Lightroom Classic". Lightroom is a wonderful tool for organizing and editing photos. Its advanced features can really push your photos to the next level. You can see Chris' photography at https://cscottphoto.smugmug.com/ . QCPC Programs are free to attend. Voluntary contributions are appreciated.

The Quad Cities Photography Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm in Southall House at the KD Art Center. This group was created in January 2022. Their mission is to provide an informal, friendly, and supportive environment for local photographers at all levels of experience and with interests in all types of photographic imagery. They share ideas and knowledge with one another through participation in meetings, guest lectures, and club excursions. If you are interested in joining the Quad Cities Photo Club, visit their page.

Earlier this month we had a visit from a high school Art Club in Tuscaloosa. They made it just in time to visit the exhibits โ€œA Look Within: Hiram and KD at the Turn of the Centuryโ€ and โ€œThreading the Pastโ€ before they ended.
First the students explored the Hiram exhibit with a scavenger hunt. Then, Glen Rikard gave a gallery talk about quilt making and the history of his collection. Afterward, they enjoyed a hands-on activity where each student created their own construction paper quilt square. The squares can later be hung together to form a Class Quilt! We hope to see the final project soon.

Celebrate Your Creativity Mini Retreat in Florence
Florence Arts & Museums is happy to host Monica Yother of Studio 127 on Saturday, April 11 from 9am - 4pm at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence for a mini retreat. Participants can attend one of two sessions or both. The first session will focus on junk journal making while the second session will focus on gel plate printing and open art journaling. Here are brief descriptions of each session:

JUNK JOURNAL MAKING: 9:00am - 12:00pm
We'll be taking old papers, book pages, painted and stained pages and putting them together to make a journal. I'll show you a simple way to sew the books into the covers, and then we'll have time to start filling it. You are welcome to bring any papers you have been stockpiling. This is a fun way of creating a journal that has character built into every page!

GEL PLATE PRINTING & OPEN ART JOURNALING: 1:00pm - 4:00pm
If you've been wanting to try gel plate printing but are not sure how to start, this is the perfect class. And if you are already familiar and just need time and space to make your prints, then this is also the perfect class! I'll have gel plates, brayers, stencils, stamps, and loads of paper to help you scratch that creative itch! And if you just want to bring an art journal and fill some pages with goodies you can do that, too!

Lunch will not be provided. However, there will be an hour in between sessions to grab lunch. You can register for this event at: https://tinyurl.com/2nw8kym6.
