Currently featured in Contemporary Photography of Place and Identity, Lukeman’s photographs explore the intersection of place, time, and human presence.

Martha Peters has long built a practice rooted in observation- quiet, intuitive, and deeply tied to place. With a background shaped by years of leadership in public art across Texas, her photographic work carries that same sensitivity to environment, translating land, water, and sky into something personal.

Moving through Tarrant and Burnet County, Peters captures fleeting, often overlooked moments- light catching in reeds, reflections in dark water, the stillness of trees and brush. Printed in archival gelatin silver, these images lean into a timeless black-and-white palette that heightens texture, contrast, and atmosphere, inviting a slower, more contemplative way of seeing.

There’s a meditative quality to Peters’ work, where the Texas landscape unfolds layer by layer, nuances emerging the longer you linger.

Bringing together the work of Jon Flaming, Jill Johnson, Bob Lukeman, Dontrius Williams, and Martha Peters, the show offers a layered look at how place shapes identity—through expansive landscapes, quiet skyscapes, and deeply personal visual narratives. Each artist approaches the idea of “ground” differently, yet their works resonate in conversation, revealing shared threads of memory, belonging, and lived experience.

Despite our speedy photo reel, these photographs by Dontrius Williams deserve some time and attention.

Take the image of the Sisterhood is Powerful purse for example: the letters are made from electroluminescent wire that is battery lit in a hot blue hue. The purse itself is an art piece by Michele Pred from her Power of the Purse series that views the purse as a small-scale billboard.

Stop by the gallery to examine these artworks thoroughly, paying close attention to the narratives conveyed through their shadows, reflections, and expressive qualities.
