Meet our featured artist of May, Isai Soto!

The San Ysidro Plan, a 45-foot fabric mural, commemorates the labor history of the Central Valley, a recurring site of artist Isai’s upbringing. With relatives working in the nearby almond fields and grapevines, he draws on the 1965 Delano Grape Strike, emphasizing the power of farmworkers’—rather than a single leader’s—ability to achieve unionization. The title references El Plan de San Luis Potosí, a political manifesto that influenced the 1910 Mexican Revolution, of which the opening line is inscribed across the mural. The San Ysidro Plan mirrors the fragmented conditions of the agricultural workforce through a portrayal of wandering luchadores, and calls for a reunified labor front.

Isai Soto (he/him) is a Chicano artist from Fallbrook, California. After receiving a BA in Anthropology from Columbia University, he pursued a career in the arts informed by his studies in autoethnography. In New York, he grew fascinated by rave flyers which influenced his style as a graphic designer and printmaker. He displays the friction between his ethnic heritage and American nationality as it was presented in his upbringing, at times at odds and at times harmonious, via posterwork and costumes. He has exhibited at Manhattan Graphics Center, the Brooklyn Public Library, Macaulay Honors College, and has performed at various nightclubs in drag. He works from his home in Oakland, California.

Isai Soto’s work will be on view until May 31st!

We are deeply honored to have worked alongside John during the final years of his remarkable career, to have witnessed not only his genius but also the profound impact his work and his person—as an educator, family man, and member of the Fresno art community—have had on the Central Valley.

We have lost a pillar of our organization, a mentor, a friend. We join the Sierra family in their grief and reaffirm our commitment to carrying on his legacy.

¡Hasta pronto, queridísimo amigo!

A funeral Mass will take place at St. Anthony’s on Aug. 6 at 10 a.m., and Arte Américas will host a celebration of life in Plaza Paz at 6 p.m. the same day.

Co-founder of Arte Américas and champion of Chicano art dies in Fresno at 83

“I don’t believe in fighting today in any one front, but on all fronts.” - Malcolm X

The issues surrounding immigration policy are as complex and multifaceted as the lives they impact. The On All Fronts Series will highlight researchers, advocates, and culture makers confronting injustice in the immigrant community from different angles and on many different fronts.
