The road to a new Nation being forged began today in 1775, with the "shots heard around the world" starting the American Revolution.

The Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, marked the start of the American Revolutionary War, signaling open rebellion against British rule. British troops aimed to seize colonial militia supplies in Concord and arrest Patriot leaders. Paul Revere’s ride warned colonists, leading to armed, decisive confrontations that forced a British retreat to Boston.

On April 19, a skirmish broke out on Lexington Common, killing eight Massachusetts militia men. The first shots were fired, but the source remains uncertain.

Following Lexington, colonial militia held their ground and inflicted casualties on British regulars at the North Bridge in Concord, forcing them to turn back.
The retreat to Boston was disastrous for the British, as they were continually harassed by, and lost many men to, colonial militia using guerrilla-style tactics.

The conflict caused roughly 73 British deaths and 49 American deaths.
Impact: The events proved the colonists could stand against the British Army, triggering a widespread uprising and leading to the formation of the Continental Army.
