✨ Meet NSHM’s 2026 Gardiner Foundation Young Scholar Intern, Kimberly Schleimer ✨

We’re thrilled to welcome Kimberly to the North Shore Historical Museum as this year’s Gardiner Foundation Young Scholar Intern. She’s already diving into our collections with curiosity, care, and a true historian’s eye.

In this photo, Kimberly is holding one of the first items she catalogued: a letter from Ethel Kennedy, written to Mrs. Coleman Raphael, then‑president of the Glen Cove League of Women Voters. In it, Mrs. Kennedy expresses her gratitude for an invitation to visit Long Island’s North Shore — a small but meaningful window into the civic life and community leadership of the era.

Kimberly will be spending the summer helping preserve, organize, and interpret materials like this for future researchers and visitors. We’re so excited to have her talent and enthusiasm at NSHM.

We’re excited to be part of the Glen Cove Downtown Art Crawl this Friday, May 1 from 6–9 PM. Visit the Museum to experience our exhibition No Longer Hidden, explore our permanent Harlem Hellfighters gallery, and enjoy a few fun photo ops — including the historic judge’s bench and our basement jail cell.

Make an evening of it with a stop at Otherside Wine Bar right across the street. Thanks to the Glen Cove Downtown BID for organizing this fun night out!

Our heartfelt thanks to the NSHM Board and the many friends who joined us last night for the No Longer Hidden exhibition celebration. Irene Harris shared the histories of African Americans whose brilliance and perseverance have helped shape the country we know today, and she did so with clarity, warmth, and deep insight.

We’re grateful to everyone who continues to support this work of bringing overlooked stories into the light.

GLEN COVE EOC VISITS THE MUSEUM
North Shore Historical Museum was delighted to recently welcome members of Glen Cove EOC, including participants from the Golden Legacy senior program and two members of the youth program, for a special visit and guided tour.

The tour was led by Museum Director Christopher Judge, and we were especially appreciative of Yissel Hidalgo, Community Organizer at Glen Cove EOC, for generously sharing her translation skills during the visit. The outing was coordinated by Lifetime Museum Member and former Trustee Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews, who also serves on the Glen Cove EOC board alongside fellow board members Karen Jones and Leslie Mullin. While Program Director Irma Jeanty was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict, her support and encouragement were instrumental in helping make the visit possible.

Guests explored the Museum’s current featured exhibition, NO LONGER HIDDEN: Black and Women’s History at the North Shore Historical Museum, which runs through June 10. Inspired in part by Hidden Figures, the exhibition celebrates the achievements and lasting impact of Black leaders, innovators, and community builders—both nationally and here on the North Shore. Visitors also enjoyed permanent exhibits highlighting local history, including the Harlem Hellfighters and the women’s suffrage movement. We were especially pleased that Dr. Jamesetta A. Halley-Boyce was in attendance and shared her insight, further enriching the experience for all. Also, special recognition to Irene Harris, whose vision and research shaped this outstanding exhibition, to Jonathan Sherman and Dr. Richard Harris, and to all who helped bring the exhibit to life.

The Museum is open every weekend, Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 4 p.m. Thanks to a generous gift, admission is free. For more information visit nshmgc.org.

About the North Shore Historical Museum
The North Shore Historical Museum (NSHM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and sharing the rich history of Long Island’s North Shore. Located in the historic 1907 Justices Court Building, NSHM serves as a center for education, community engagement, and local heritage stewardship.

Position Overview
NSHM seeks a motivated and detail‑oriented Gardiner Young Scholar to assist with a critical collections documentation and organization project during Summer 2026. The Scholar will work under the supervision of the Museum Director to help catalog, organize, and document objects, photographs, archival materials, and ephemera in NSHM’s permanent collection.

This position offers meaningful, hands‑on experience in museum collections management, archival handling, and local history research. It is ideal for students interested in history, museums, library science, archaeology, or related fields.

Responsibilities
The Gardiner Young Scholar will assist with tasks including:
Organizing and rehousing collection materials using museum‑appropriate methods
Cataloging objects, photographs, and archival items
Entering and updating records in NSHM’s collections database
Photographing objects and preparing basic digital documentation
Applying Object ID labels and ensuring proper tracking of materials
Assisting with inventory projects and identifying undocumented items
Supporting the development of future exhibitions through improved documentation
Completing a brief end‑of‑project reflection and participating in the required Gardiner Foundation video component

Qualifications
Ages 15–22 (per Gardiner Foundation program guidelines)
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions carefully
Interest in history, museums, archives, or cultural heritage
Ability to work independently and stay organized
Comfortable with repetitive tasks that require accuracy
Professionalism, reliability, and respect for historical materials
No prior museum experience required—training will be provided

Schedule & Compensation
Total commitment: 100 hours, completed between May and August 2026
Schedule is flexible and will be arranged with the Museum Director
Scholar receives a $1,600 stipend funded by the Gardiner Foundation
Work will take place on‑site at the North Shore Historical Museum
