Cockayne At Glen Dale

Cockayne At Glen Dale The house was lived in by the family until 2001.

Owned by the City of Glen Dale and operated by the Marshall County Historical Society, the Historic Cockayne Farmstead is a unique historic site in Marshall County, West Virginia. Built by Bennett Cockayne in 1850 and enlarged in the 1890's, the Cockayne farmhouse was once the focal point of a 300-acre, highly successful and internationally recognized Merino wool producing farm. Touring the house

you will experience the story of Sam Cockayne, the last member of the family, a World War II veteran who returns to the homefront to find everything he left changed forever - and decides to change nothing more. Sam's decision has resulted in this amazing gift to the people: a historic house like none other still full of its original furniture, documents, and household items, a time capsule that contrasts a tale of Victorian success and innovation with the story of a man that the modern world left behind.

We’re always excited to see Sam Cockayne’s roses bloom every year!

We're getting very excited for June! The first week of June we start both our Farmers Market and our annual Hungry for History Summer Speaker Series.

The Farmers Market takes place at the Cockayne Farmstead every Wednesday, beginning June 3, from 3-6pm. We'll have vegetables, meat, eggs, herbs, plants, coffee, wax melts, and more. We have new exciting vendors and crafts for kids every week!

Hungry for History happens at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library and features a new history-themed speaker each Monday at noon, through June and July. We kick it off with Dr. Hal Gorby on June 1 speaking about West Virginians and the Vietnam War. We have a great lineup this year and we hope you'll join us each week!

And they’re off! Great start to our Annual Golf Scramble! Thank you to all who support the scramble.

There's a Marshall County Historical Society Membership Meeting tonight (Monday, May 11) at the Bloyd House at 600 Tomlinson Avenue in Moundsville. We've got a great speaker and we'll be talking about all the ways you can get more involved in the society. Come if you're just interested in joining, too!

Join us on Monday, May 11th, at the Bloyd House located at 600 Tomlinson Avenue at 6:00! We will be joined by Roseanna Dakan Keller, co-author of the Marshall County Patriots and Heroes book series. Roseanna, through the years, has talked to countless veterans helping document their stories to make sure they are never forgotten. She's coming to tell us the stories of the patriots and heroes whose stories were almost lost to history.

This meeting will be open to members and members of the public. Light refreshments will be served and updates on what we're doing with the society will also be shared!

We're going to try something new for our Farmers Market this year! Along with our Cockayne merchandise, our volunteers will be manning a "Market Table" - where we sell your products for you!

Maybe you have a surplus of eggs to sell but can't make the market because of your work schedule or kids' activities. Maybe you just grew a little extra in your garden but you don't feel it's worth sitting in a booth for three hours. Maybe you attend another market that night but you always have a little extra.

Whatever the reason, we'll be happy to sell your produce or other home-produced goods for you. Just bring them by on Tuesday or Wednesday each week and we'll put them out at our table and keep track of what you sell. We keep 20% for doing the selling, while you collect 80% for your products!

We're hoping this makes it easier for more vendors to participate in the market while also giving our customers more options to buy local. Win win!

Farmers Market begins the first Wednesday in June, 3-6pm. See you there!
