Poetry Writing in the Gallery
Monday, June 15 | 6 to 8 p.m. | $15

Join poetry guide, Nancy Levenson, for a night of blending your love of art with your own poetic words. This is a 2-hour special program that will be held during the Curtis Center's Watercolor Society exhibit. Through a mixture of examples, discussion, and prompts, you’ll have the chance to respond to selected works of visual art and generate your own poems. We will have an optional group sharing and open mic.

Through the artful interplay of words and imagery, these poems offer a fresh perspective and expand upon original artwork, bridging the gap between visual and literary realms. Nancy encourages all levels of poets to explore how images can evoke emotion, memory, and story, and how we can translate what we see and sense into powerful poetic language.

🦎 Animalitos: Eco-Sculpture
Saturday, August 8 | 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. | $75 - all supplies provided

Join artist Cipriano Ortega and poet Nancy Levenson in assembling your very own spirit Animalito! Using re-purposed wood students will assemble, paint and decorate their very own Animalito eco sculpture. These Animalitos are inspired by the traditional ones made in Mexico and Guatemala. They are mythical creatures that live in the spirit world. Throughout the drying process of your project, we will step into poetry prompts. Each prompt will lead to crafting a poem specific to your Animalito.

🍃 Watercolor and Gouache Sketching
Wednesdays, May 27 to June 24 | 1 to 4 p.m. | $100

Learn the basics of watercolor and gouache techniques for sketching and painting landscapes. Gouache is a water-medium paint consisting of natural pigment and is designed to be opaque. Working with this hybrid medium will allow students to render landscapes quickly and expressively.

This class is designed for those who have had previous painting experience. It is not recommended for those who have never worked in gouache.

💙 Cyanotype Weekend Workshops
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Session 1: June 6 | Session 2: June 27 | $75 - $100 all supplies provided

Cyanotypes are created using photo reactive dye on paper with objects placed on top and then set in the sun to produce a beautiful image. In this unique class we will celebrate the sun and create our own cyanotypes or photo reactive art! Students are encouraged to bring in their own objects and materials to use, anything that will create an interesting shadow. Examples: flowers, leaves, wire springs, cut out metal or other interesting shapes. Be creative!

Explore the colorful expressive world of abstract acrylic painting with instructor Maggie Stewart! Nothing is more inspiring or freeing than to make large sweeping strokes with paint. Students will work large in this class and are encouraged to experiment and repaint.
