Haverstraw Brick Museum

Haverstraw Brick Museum Come visit the Museum and relive the impressive history of this time and area on the Hudson. It was designed by John Rossi and is located in Bow Line Park.

The Ramapo Brick Company took its name after the Dutch-corrupted Munsee word "Ramapough" used to describe the mountain ranges of what are now Rockland, Bergen, and Passaic Counties.

While no direct ties between the company and the Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation have been found, the company name is a testament to the Nation's impact and stewardship in the region.

The Haverstraw Brick Museum is extending its hours in conjunction with its America 250 exhibition and updated timeline!

Starting today, June 20th, the Museum will be open Fridays 1-4PM, Saturdays and Sundays 12-5PM, and by appointment during the week!

Juneteenth is a celebration recognizing the day that Union troops began enforcing the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation in Gaveston, Texas, in 1865.

Haverstraw - then the village of Warren in remembrance of a revolutionary war soldier - had a prominent free Black community decades prior. An 1854 map shows the African Methodist Episcopal Bethel Church on Jefferson Street. Slavery wasn't abolished in New York State until 1827, and census records show many in Haverstraw enslaved people.

Many thanks to the johngreenhouse.org for letting us snag some bricks - these were taken from one of the two interior wall chimneys in the home!

Pictured are a J J J (Jova) from Roseton, (Patrick and Phillip) O'Brien from Verplanck's Point, and a couple of illegible frogs. The sandstone exterior was finished in 1819, however these bricks date to the 1880s-1900s.

In the winters, many brickyard workers hiked to Rockland Lake to excavate ice under the Knickerbocker Ice Company. Pictured is an ice box, and ice saw.

Knickerbocker became a popular word to describe the Dutch pants style that ended below the knee. The name was also shortened for New York's basketball team - Knicks in 4 🏀 !!!
