There are many different types of storage in 3D collections. Artifacts are exhibited periodically, but must be rotated out to limit exposure to light, dust, and other agents that speed up deterioration. When in storage, clothing is stored hanging in covered racks or in archival storage boxes. This video shows how we prepare clothing for storage in a box. To maximize space, staff carefully pack multiple pieces of clothing in one box, giving consideration to the stability of the fabric. Heavier fabrics are placed in the bottom of the box, with lighter fabrics in the top layers.

Did you know that HAHS began collecting heritage artifacts in 1957? The first object that was recorded was a lard press donated in 1960. In 1979, staff and volunteers began a cataloging project; they logged each object collected prior to 1980. They assigned unique numbers to each object and documented the physical characteristics of the objects. This is a practice that has persisted through the years and is continued today by the HAHS Collections team, which is made up of staff and volunteers. The collections at HAHS are made up of the Archives (paper, photographs and associated materials) and 3D Objects (pretty much anything not paper or photo related).

Happy Rodeo Weekend, Partner! The Hayward Rodeo/Castro Valley Rodeo/Rowell Ranch Rodeo (yes, it's had different names over time!) is certainly a part of our greater Area's fabric of history with roots in Hayward that reach over to Castro Valley and Dublin Canyon. Some aspects look fairly similar, like the parade, buckin' broncs, and western attire. But other things seem to have been left to time, like the beard growing contest with winners in different categories followed by a literal close shave. Here's a quick peek into some of HAHS' archival rodeo materials, featuring a scrapbook documenting the 1951 version of the Rodeo. Enjoy!

Bring the family to the HAHS Museum on Saturday, May 16 and get creative in honor of AAPI Heritage Month! Story time starts at 11:00 AM. Then learn about Hayward artist Hisako Hibi and her artistic techniques that focused on the landscapes around her and found objects. Have fun creating your own artwork in Hibi's style. In addition, local artist Ruey Syrop will lead a children's watercolor class from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. The watercolor portion is free to attend, but registration is recommended as space is limited. Registration and more information about visiting HAHS is always online at www.haywardareahistory.org.

Due to unexpected events, we had to reschedule our Brushes & Brunch: Play with Acrylics session with guest instructor Louis Jiminez to Saturday, May 9. That means there's still time to buy tickets, and maybe bring your mom for Mother's Day, to the HAHS Museum to learn a new art medium while supporting both HAHS and the Hayward Arts Council! More info about this fundraising series and tickets are available online at www.haywardareahistory.org.

Last Friday was magical! The food was plentiful, the wine flowed, and the music was amazing. Big thanks to Anna May and Greg Jones for hosting such a beautiful event to honor the 100th anniversary of their home. Guests were dazzled by harpists from the California Harp Center and noshed on delicious specialties from Casa Del Toro. The good times are evident by all the smiles that were caught!
