The Retreat Route - Just minutes from The Hermitage, Washington’s troops crossed the Hackensack River at Historic New Bridge Landing New Bridge Landing during their retreat from Fort Lee.

It was one of the most pivotal moments of the war, and it happened right here in our backyard. Stand in the rooms where families waited for news from the front.

Bergen County was a volatile borderland between British‑held NYC and Washington’s forces. Skirmishes, spies, and midnight riders were part of daily life here.

Do you know the ties of Waldwick and the Hermitage? (besides being next door neighbors?) When the Rosencrantz family made major architectural changes to the house in 1847 the plan was to re-name it to Waldwic Cottage (Saxon for "light in the woods), but the name didn't stick. Instead, in 1919 Orville Township (which included parts of Ho-Ho-Kus and Washington Township) officially became Waldwick! Go celebrate America's 250th at this very special event (and then maybe come take a tour of the Hermitage!)
