And here's a look at what's going on at the library this month! It's one of my favorite months here at the library because SUMMER READING STARTS!!!
This summer should be super fun - the theme is "Unearth a Story..." (think Dinosaurs, Paleontology, Archeology, & America250)!

Happy First Day of June!

Big happenings with the first batch of Monarchs here at the library! One of the caterpillars in the Children’s Room has entered the J-Phase!

Of course, I needed a refresher as to what exactly that meant, so in case any of you do too…..
“When Monarch Caterpillars are ready to pupate, they weave a silk pad to hang from.
Fun fact: the spinneret (the organ that secretes the silk thread) of caterpillars is located in their mouth.
When the silk pad is ready, the caterpillar attaches itself to it from its last proleg pair and slowly lets go of its four other pairs of prolegs. The caterpillar then hangs upside down in a ‘J’ shape, a stage which lasts around 10-12 hours before it turns into a chrysalis.”

This world is fascinating!!

Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!
Here’s an update on Week 3 of Butterflies at the Library!🦋

We’ve had several new friends join us at the library over the long weekend! Woohoo!!
Last week, we welcomed a second Caterpillar Castle to the library & placed it in the YA (Young Adult) Room. This morning we’re seeing 4 tiny caterpillars munching on the leaves!! Yay!! And ‘welcome’ to our new arrivals!!

Our friends in the Children’s Room have grown A LOT over the weekend as well. Check out how BIG they’ve gotten😆!! Especially compared to the caterpillars in the other room, it’s astounding how much change & growth can occur in just over a week’s time!
Come on by & see for yourself – it’s fascinating!

Your Week 2 update on Butterflies at the Library 🦋🦋

Numerous small holes in the leaves of the plant led us to discover 2 tiny caterpillars happily munching the morning away 😊

It’s interesting that they are so tiny yet already have their distinctive coloring – the alternating bands of yellow, black, and white. Unfortunately, it’s real hard to see that in the pictures, so stop on by the library this week to check them out for yourself & see if you can spot any additional caterpillars (be sure & tell us if you do)!

It’s BUTTERFLY time again!! 😆🦋

We had such an amazing time watching the magical transformation of these butterflies last year, that we decided to do it again! For the next month (-ish), we will have the pleasure of watching these itty-bitty creatures transform into beautiful Monarchs!

Right now, they are tiny eggs, about the size of a pinhead or pencil tip, attached to a Milkweed plant which they will soon be using for food. Monarch eggs usually hatch about four days after they are laid, so, very soon, we should start to see little holes appearing on the Milkweed leaves. This will be our tiny friends happily munching away so that they can grow into their next stage of life.

Stop by our children's room each week to check on their progress – it is fascinating (and, while you're here, be sure to check out some wonderful books as well )!!
