Art Center East

Art Center East Member-based nonprofit rural art center. Offering: 3 exhibit galleries, art classes, community events Join us!

Since its founding in 1977 as the Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council, Art Center East has developed and coordinated arts learning programs in rural schools and communities throughout Northeast Oregon. In the years since, we've grown into a thriving community art center. Housed in a historic Carnegie Library building, Art Center East shows over a dozen annual exhibits (free admission!), offers hu

ndreds of hands-on art classes and music instruction, hosts monthly community events (also free!), provides rental studio space, and promotes the value of art and the arts economy in our region, bolstering the living wage local artists can earn from their work. We continue our work in bringing art instruction to Eastern Oregon through our Artists in Rural Schools program. As a member-based organization, community is at the chore of our work. Our members get fun perks, and they are central to building a thriving and diverse art scene in our rural home.

"Andy Newton, J.D., is a Portland-area cryptid that was picked up by intergalactic aliens and dropped in La Grande in mid-2025. He is an accomplished speaker in the realm of tropical fish husbandry, having given talks at local aquarium society meetings across the states of Oregon and California, as well as at the national American Cichlid Association annual convention in Louisville in 2022. His primary method of creation is crossing the various North American Pitcher Plants and selecting the various patterns and colors that come alongside a batch of seedlings.

Andy Newton makes art. Sometimes he likes the art he makes, and it is usually made in his partner's basement. With over two months of experience, few have referred to him as an "experienced ceramicist." He has received rave reviews of his work by few, including his mother, who said: "Wow, you made this? Interesting." and his partner's mother, who coincidentally also said "Wow, you made this? Interesting."'

Yellow-headed Blackbird in Wool: Needle-Felting Study
(Age 16+)
Saturday, May 16 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Cost: $75 Member / $80 Non-Member

Join us in celebrating the Friends of Ladd Marsh annual Bird Festival that takes place May 15-17! This fun hands-on workshop at ACE on is a great way to learn about needle felting – no experience necessary.

With Teaching Artist Christie as your guide, you’ll explore two-dimensional needle felting by creating a yellow-headed blackbird, one of the many bird species that live in the Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area here in the Grande Ronde Valley.

You’ll learn to use wool roving and felting needles, and you’ll learn foundational techniques such as layering, color blending, shaping, edge control, and texture building. Christie’s step-by-step instruction will help you transform a recognizable bird form into an amazing work of fiber art! At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your completed needle-felted blackbird – and you’ll have the skills and confidence to continue exploring needle felting on your own. Your child or teen can explore their creativity in a fun and supportive environment during our free Youth Open Art Studio sessions for all students in 9th through 12th grade! ACE will provide a variety of art supplies and mediums for each of these drop-in sessions held in our large, ground floor art-making studio. Students may bring an art project they’re already working on or start a new project, and they may bring their own supplies from home.
