Art Center East

Art Center East Member-based nonprofit rural art center. Offering: 3 exhibit galleries, art classes, community events Join us!

Since its founding in 1977 as the Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council, Art Center East has developed and coordinated arts learning programs in rural schools and communities throughout Northeast Oregon. In the years since, we've grown into a thriving community art center. Housed in a historic Carnegie Library building, Art Center East shows over a dozen annual exhibits (free admission!), offers hu

ndreds of hands-on art classes and music instruction, hosts monthly community events (also free!), provides rental studio space, and promotes the value of art and the arts economy in our region, bolstering the living wage local artists can earn from their work. We continue our work in bringing art instruction to Eastern Oregon through our Artists in Rural Schools program. As a member-based organization, community is at the chore of our work. Our members get fun perks, and they are central to building a thriving and diverse art scene in our rural home.

Paint Beyond the Numbers: Frida Kahlo Color Experience (Age 21+)
Saturday, September 19 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Paint-by-numbers is just the beginning! Join Teaching Artist Aeriel for this welcoming and relaxed painting workshop inspired by the iconic imagery and bold vision of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). No painting experience is necessary, and all skill levels are welcome.

You’ll begin with a Frida Kahlo paint-by-numbers kit as a structured starting point. Aeriel will then continue to guide you step by step in moving beyond the template using a different painting as a reference. Together, you’ll mix colors to match Frida’s favorite palettes.

If you prefer to continue painting by numbers instead of moving beyond the template, that’s just fine. The aim is to have fun!

You’ll take home your completed painting at the end of the workshop. Feel free to bring a favorite b**r, w**e, or non-alcoholic beverage. ACE will provide a light snack. All supplies are included in the workshop cost. Please enter the ACE building through the 5th Street door.

Deep Woods in Watercolor (Ages 7-15)
Saturdays: September 19, & 26 from 9:00 – 10:15 am

Students in “Deep Woods in Watercolor” will learn about native Oregon flora, fauna, and landscapes – trees, wildlife, rivers, and mountains – while discovering their own style! No painting experience necessary. Teaching Artist Stabros is the students’ guide, and the class will explore Eastern Oregon flora, fauna, and landscapes.

Note: This series is open to students who only come to class once in a while, but please make sure to register each week so that we can gather the right amount of art supplies!

At the end of each class, students will take home a technique practice sheet, their watercolor interpretation of Oregon flora and fauna, and knowledge about watercolor painting and our beautiful forests. All supplies are provided. Please enter the ACE building through the 5th Street door.
