Bok Tower Gardens is aware of community concerns that bats may be trapped inside El Retiro during the ongoing bat relocation project. Based on our ongoing observations, bats have continued to move in and out of the estate throughout the process.

This video was recorded at El Retiro on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The relocation effort has been underway for several days, and many bats have already left El Retiro. Some may now be roosting in our bat houses located throughout the preserve lands.

The project is being carried out with appropriate professional guidance and in coordination with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. These efforts are intended to protect the health and safety of visitors and wildlife.

We appreciate the community’s concern for the bats. Bok Tower Gardens remains committed to managing this process responsibly and will continue to share updates as the project progresses.

Bok Tower Gardens recognizes the public’s concern regarding the bat relocation project at El Retiro and shares a commitment to the responsible care and protection of wildlife.

Bok Tower Gardens staff have observed bats leaving and reentering through other roof openings that remain accessible. We are coordinating with our project partners and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to address public questions and review the next phase of the project.

The project was initiated to address concerns for the safety of our visitors and staff, the well-being of the bat colony, and the preservation of the historic El Retiro structure. Bat activity has contributed to deterioration of the historic building, while the accumulation of guano presents potential health concerns.

Our goal is to address these issues while giving appropriate consideration to wildlife and the protection of this important historic resource.

We are continuing to work with our project partners to gather additional information and determine the appropriate next steps. We appreciate the public’s concern and patience as we work toward a path forward.

Bok Tower Gardens remains committed to protecting our visitors, preserving our historic resources, and treating wildlife responsibly. We will share additional information as it becomes available.
