Tucked beneath the spectacular Teton Range near Moose, White Grass Dude Ranch offers a glimpse into the early days of dude ranching in Jackson Hole!

Established in 1913, White Grass was one of the valley’s earliest dude ranches, welcoming visitors who came West in search of horseback riding, outdoor adventure, and a taste of ranch life beneath the Tetons. The ranch operated for decades before eventually becoming part of Grand Teton National Park, where its historic log buildings remain an important piece of Wyoming’s tourism and dude-ranching history.

Today, White Grass has found a new purpose as the Western Center for Historic Preservation, where preservation specialists learn the traditional skills needed to care for historic buildings throughout the National Park System. While you can’t book a dude-ranch stay there anymore, visitors to Grand Teton can still explore the surrounding landscape and enjoy a vacation among the same mountains, trails, and open spaces that drew White Grass guests more than a century ago.

Looking to escape into the mountains while enjoying a little Wyoming history? Tucked away in the beautiful Bighorn Mountains west of Sheridan, Spear-O-Wigwam has been welcoming visitors to experience the wild beauty of northern Wyoming for generations.

Established as a dude ranch in 1923, Spear-O-Wigwam offered guests a rustic retreat filled with horseback riding, fishing, hiking, and plenty of fresh mountain air. Its history even includes a famous visitor: a young Ernest Hemingway stayed at the ranch in 1928 while working on A Farewell to Arms.

Today, Spear-O-Wigwam continues that tradition as a mountain campus and recreation destination operated by Sheridan College. Visitors can explore the surrounding trails, forests, lakes, and streams while experiencing a historic piece of Wyoming’s dude-ranching heritage.

Sometimes the perfect vacation is simply a cabin, a mountain trail, and a little history.

Looking for a Wyoming getaway where history comes with a view? Nestled beneath the Tetons near Moose, Triangle X Ranch has been welcoming guests to experience Wyoming’s wide-open spaces for nearly a century!

The Turner family established Triangle X in 1926, and what began as a working ranch soon became part of Wyoming’s growing dude ranch tradition. Today, the historic ranch operates within Grand Teton National Park and remains family-run, carrying generations of Western hospitality into the present day.

Visitors can saddle up for horseback rides beneath the Tetons, fish, hike, enjoy ranch-style meals, and settle into rustic cabins surrounded by some of Wyoming’s most spectacular scenery. It’s a chance to experience the landscape, traditions, and history that have drawn travelers to Wyoming for generations.

Want to spend your vacation with a little Wyoming history? Head to the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains and saddle up at Eatons' Ranch, widely recognized as the first dude ranch in the United States!

The Eaton brothers began welcoming paying guests to their ranching operation in the late 1800s, offering Eastern visitors a chance to experience life in the West. In 1904, the family relocated to their present ranch near Wolf, Wyoming, where generations of guests have come to ride horses, explore the open range, and experience the traditions of Western ranch life.

More than a century later, Eatons’ Ranch is still welcoming visitors. With miles of trails, historic cabins, horseback riding, fishing, and plenty of wide-open Wyoming landscape, you can spend your vacation enjoying a piece of living history and discover why the dude ranch became a Wyoming tradition.

~ Moments from the field ~

We just finished our time at Gillespie Place just east of the Wind River Range in Wyoming and our momentum is feeling palpable. Four weeks, 25 volunteers, and a teeter totter later and we've completed the roof, log repairs, along with chinking and daubing of the entire cabin.

If only Sarah F. Gillespie could see the finishing touches herself!

Our season continues with the next stop for our Four Corners circuit landing back at Section House above Breckenridge, Colorado. Great job team and we cannot wait to share more photos from our time at Gillespie Place!

Congratulations to the Albany County Historic Preservation Board on the successful nomination of the Lincoln Monument to the National Register of Historic Places!

The National Park Service recently listed the Abraham Lincoln Monument, located at the Sherman Summit Rest Area off Interstate 80 east of Laramie, to the National Register of Historic Places.

In response to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s announcement this evening on the passage of the unassembled vote to move forward with a notice of proposed rulemaking regarding revisions to the regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, “Protection of Historic Properties,” 36 CFR Part 800, National Trust President and CEO Brent Leggs issued the following statement:

“We are not shocked—but saddened—by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s decision to advance devastating changes to the Section 106 process. The proposed changes threaten the history of our nation and the fabric of our society—this is an attack on our civic and cultural inheritance. Safeguarding our nation’s historic assets is central to our mission. The National Trust, and our partners across the country, will work tirelessly to mobilize the American public and activate Congress to defeat these harmful regulations.”

Please enjoy this note from our Executive Director, Megan Stanfill: "Back in 1999, I was fortunate enough to witness the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the Outer Banks of North Carolina be moved to its new, less vulnerable home farther from the shoreline. It was a truly impressive feat that had a profound impact on my understanding of the value of historic places at a young age.

Twenty-seven years later, I still remember the pride and excitement of watching such an important structure be saved. Earlier this year, watching the Fossil Cabin move to its new, safer home brought those same feelings rushing back, reminding me of what is possible when communities come together to protect places that matter.
