This was one of the first close‑up shots from a wolf sighting earlier this month in Yellowstone. They’d gone around a small hill and I assumed they were heading straight away to rejoin their packmates just ahead. But then he appeared, ears first, then those eyes, slowly coming up the rise in front of me as I captured image after image. It was a truly breathtaking moment in my photography career.

I spent some time with this black bear recently. Her senses were dialed in the whole time as she kept glancing over her shoulder at something I couldn’t see. Then she turned fully, locked in, and a few moments later a lone bison wandered over the rise. She slipped across the road to give him space and continued her assault on the spring grasses that make up most of her diet.

It’s wonderfully rewarding when I get to witness a tender moment in nature. Most days out there are all grit and survival, but every now and then, I stumble into something soft, like this mom and her baby fox sharing a quiet pause. I’ll take these moments whenever they come.

I’m often asked how much “Photoshopping” goes into my images, especially how I “remove” backgrounds. So here’s a little behind‑the‑scenes look.

The images on the left are the RAW files straight out of the camera, the ones on the right are the edited photos. These particular shots didn’t need much work at all. Over time I’ve learned to pay as much attention to the background as to the subject, and in the first image I framed the owl against a dark, shady patch of trees.

When I stepped just a little to the right, this northern pygmy owl was suddenly backed by bright sky instead for a completely different look.

Some slight editing to the RAW files and the photos were done!

Hopefully this helps people understand a bit of my process, and that completing the photo actually starts before hitting the shutter button.

People familiar with my work know I have an affection for foxes. This Yellowstone fox made the rounds earlier this month, hoping for a handout. It’s tempting, but feeding wildlife only pushes them toward danger. Animals that get too comfortable with people often end up in conflicts that cost them their lives. After my rejection, he headed into the forest to look for his natural food source. Keeping wildlife wild is the best way we can protect them.
