The Burkholder Project

The Burkholder Project The Burkholder Project is a unique collection of 36 art and design studios with loft apartments and three levels of galleries.

It's been a Lincoln Haymarket mainstay since 1987 and features artists of all disciplines and styles. The Burkholder Project, located in downtown Lincoln's Haymarket District, is a unique collection of 36 art and design studios with loft apartments and three levels of galleries, connected by a sunfilled atrium. The Project was designed and developed by artist Anne Burkholder, who bought the buildi

ng in 1987. It was her idea to create a place where a community of artists would have excellent work spaces, as well as a support system of other creative people. The project also represents 40 regional Associated Artists in the Sampler Gallery on the lower level. The original building, built in 1914, was known as the Old Woods Brothers Office Building, which was the headquarters of several real-estate and agricultural businesses. Art thrives in this bright and exciting community in part because of the artists' interchange of ideas with one another and with the public. We invite you to join us, observe our creative processes, ask questions, learn about each of our art forms, browse through the galleries and visit the working studios and shops where you can see not only the finished works, but the works of art in progress. Enjoy your visit, and remember creativity takes concentration and unnecessary noise is a distraction. Our working hours are as diverse as our artwork. If a studio is closed the artist may be preparing for a show, painting on location, teaching or researching new projects. We hope you enjoy your visit and get to know us. We feature a new show monthly and look forward to seeing you again soon!

‘Vertical Vistas’ by Tammy Schuett will be seen in the Skylight Gallery this month,

“Unlike my previous works where my emphasis was on the earth meeting the sky, and the interesting geometry of the landscapes, with this series the focus started moving upward. It wasn’t by conscious design, it just happened. As I painted, I realized the sky was as at least as interesting as the land — fluid, arching, alive with shapes and colors — never static, always moving. I had to capture that dynamic beauty. It seems like the obvious next step but it just required looking up and seeing creation’s beautiful vertical vistas. I hope you will take time to be in that moment with me as you view this group of paintings.”

‘Transmuting Trying Times’ by Trinity McLaughlin will be featured in the Special Exhibition Space this month.

“Transmuting Trying Times is a creative expression and documentation of the personal artistic therapy I turned to during one of the most difficult stretches of my life. These works hold the thoughts and emotions that weighed heavily on me, transferred onto paper and canvas. Each piece reflects a different stage in a journey through love and grief. This body of work speaks to the idea that even in our darkest moments, we are still capable of creating something beautiful. At its core, this exhibition became a way for me to pour my soul into something tangible as I navigated both the joy and loss connected to my beautiful daughter, my baby Iris.”

“As years pass, the choices we make and things we value most seem to converge and become more focused: more defined. The same exists in the subjects we choose to paint and create. The creative process is often achieved through silence and solitude. Imagination and experience expand expression to become more contemplative and refined. Ideas are simplified and our choices reflect the confidence and quietude found in the “Color of Silence”

As we head into the new month, we will highlight our upcoming artists! Laron McGinn will be on display with Roberta Barnes in the Main & Outback Gallery.

Laron McGinn says, “Everyday is a new opportunity to reimagine yourself and your world. It’s ok to reinvent your creative voice and express yourself in a new way. Creativity is limitless.”
