In observance of National Moth Week, the UWA Cahaba Biodiversity Center is hosting a mothing event on Jul 25th.

Three observing stations (canvas cloth backlit with a blacklight) will be established in different habitats on CBC property. These stations will be monitored by some UWA faculty, students, and various scientists from different entities and agencies all night until dawn. The UWA CBC has entered into a friendly competition with the Paint Rock Forest Research Center located in Paint Rock, Alabama which is hosting a similar event. Bragging rights will center around which field station has the most species of moths documented for their event. Alabama has roughly 9000 species of moths, and National Moth Week raises awareness of the incredible biodiversity of the underappreciated group and their pollination services, not just in Alabama, but worldwide. This event will create a baseline of the species that occur at the CBC and will continue annually.
