Happy Birthday to Mooradian Gallery Artist Sam Zumian.
Sam Zumian (born Samvel Hambardzumyan, 1953) is a prominent Armenian artist known for his dynamic, expressive works that explore the “aesthetics of the unconscious” and the laws of nature. Based in Los Angeles since the early 2000s, his career spans over 30 years and includes major achievements such as winning 3rd prize in graphics at the 2005 Florence Biennale.
Artistic Style and Vision:
Zumian’s work is characterized by a strong sense of movement and plastic structure, often utilizing a “theater on canvas” approach where characters play out dramatic, mysterious, or grotesque roles.
The Subconscious: He avoids literal plots, focusing instead on one or two figures that represent crucial forces, creating a “dream-like” atmosphere.
Techniques: Originally recognized for his intricate etchings and graphic series in the 1980s, he transitioned into oil paintings on linen and canvas, maintaining a distinctive, expressive line.
Themes: His art frequently explores themes of passion, love, struggle, and various life journeys.
Background and Recognition
Education: He graduated from the Yerevan State College of Fine Arts (named after Panos Terlemezyan) and the Yerevan State Institute of Fine Arts.
Exhibitions: Zumian has exhibited internationally in countries including the United States, France, Italy, Austria, and Lebanon. He is represented by the Mooradian Gallery, which showcases his large-scale pieces like the 2024 diptych “White Sun”.
