There’s a shift happening at DAC.
As we transition between exhibitions, the gallery has once again become a space of possibility.
This week we welcome artist Shawndel N. Frazer into the space as new work begins to unfold inside the stone walls. Watching an exhibit take shape is always part of the experience — the quiet decisions, the rearranging, the energy of artwork finding its place.
We’re grateful to share this process with our community and excited for what’s ahead. More soon.

A look inside the workshops Lauren Austin shared with students during her residency at DAC.

Part of what makes our afterschool art initiatives so meaningful is giving students the chance to learn alongside working artists. During her residency, Lauren shared process, presence, and the freedom to create on your own terms with students from the Adirondack Youth Lodge, Davis Elementary, and St. Regis Mohawk School.

There were no “have to’s” — just space to create, focus the mind through making, explore storytelling, collage, drawing, and handmade origami books, and experience the creative process in their own way.

What a meaningful two weeks with nationally recognized fiber artist Lauren Austin as part of The Thrive Project Artist Residency at Downtown Artist Cellar.
Our community showed up — visiting the gallery, attending events, watching Lauren work, asking questions, and spending time with her and her artwork. Students created origami books during workshops while Lauren demonstrated and worked right in the gallery, generously sharing her process and creative practice with everyone who walked through the door.
Lauren’s fearless creativity, authenticity, and grounded presence left a lasting impact on so many people. One thing she said throughout the residency continues to stay with us: “I can make more.” A reminder that creativity is not rooted in scarcity, but in possibility, process, and a commitment to continuing to make, share, and create.
Whether through conversation, quiet observation, or creative exchange, Lauren’s work and spirit created space for connection, reflection, and inspiration.
Thank you to everyone who visited, participated, and helped make these past two weeks so special. Grateful for the support of Always Franklin, NCPR, Framed in Malone, and Poets & Writers for helping support programming throughout the residency. Art creates community.

Thank you Fairytale Dreams Photography for seeing DAC as a home for our creative community. Thank you for capturing the spirit of our after school art program so beautifully. There is no one who captures connection, care, and stories the way you do.

We were grateful to be featured twice in the Press Republican last week — including this article about funding awarded to The Thrive Project, the nonprofit partner of Downtown Artist Cellar, supporting our after school art program. We’re especially grateful to the Adirondack Community Foundation for helping support this work and the young people we serve through the arts.
