Mammoth Lakes Foundation

Mammoth Lakes Foundation Supporting higher education and cultural enrichment in the Eastern Sierra. Founded in 1989 by Dave & Roma McCoy. Come be a part of it!

Fueled by the desire to have fun in our beautiful surroundings, coupled with his tenacity of getting things done, Dave & Roma McCoy made Mammoth Lakes a great place to live, work, and play.

While entrenched in having fun building new chair lifts, runs, and lodges across Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Dave always offered a helping hand to those who asked. He assisted with vital community buildings li

ke Mammoth's hospital, fire department, and water district. Dave’s underlying concept was simple—whatever is best for the community, let’s make it happen.

In 1989, Dave and some of his friends saw a need for higher education and the arts, and started the Mammoth Lakes Foundation. Dave embodied the tremendous power of synergy within a community and showed us that we can accomplish great things when we work together. Mammoth Lakes Foundation continues to embody that today. MLF believes that higher education and cultural enrichment enhances the quality of life of residents, second homeowners, and visitors by balancing the recreational attractions in our community. Higher education and the arts promote leadership, stimulate growth, and build a stronger year-round economy. Since its founding, Mammoth Lakes Foundation successfully established a community college in Mammoth Lakes, has awarded 750+ scholarships to local students, and built student housing. Because of the generosity of our donors and supporters, the Mammoth Lakes Foundation is able to continue the "Dave's Scholars" program providing full-tuition scholarships, book stipends, and support and mentoring through the Foundation to local students. The Mammoth Lakes Foundation also awarded our first Transfer Scholarship in May 2021 to a graduating scholarship student who is continuing her education at a 4-year university. The award provides up to $10,000 tuition per year for a maximum of two years to the Transfer Scholarship recipient, along with continued mentoring and guidance from the Mammoth Lakes Foundation staff and board. On July 6, 2022, the Town of Mammoth Lakes Town Council unanimously approved an agreement with the Mammoth Lakes Foundation for the lease of Edison Hall and operation of the Edison Theatre. The Town will reopen and operate the theatre beginning this summer. For information on using the Edison Theatre, please contact the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department at 760-965-3690. Partnering with Cerro Coso Community College, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and private donors, MLF is working to create a permanent arts facility in the Eastern Sierra. Visit our website to learn more about all the wonderful ways MLF contributes to our community. We are continuing Dave McCoy's legacy in making Mammoth a great place to live, work, and play.

It’s been a joyful and busy season lately at Mammoth Lakes Foundation 🌼🎓🌿

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the privilege of celebrating students, connecting with our community, and rolling up our sleeves alongside our amazing Dave’s Scholar volunteers. From helping out at the Community Cleanup Event & Sustainability Fair to cheering on graduates across the Eastern Sierra, it’s been one of those seasons that reminds us how special this community truly is.

Earlier this month, we attended the 22nd Annual Eastern Sierra College Center Commencement Ceremony at Cerro Coso Community College in Bishop, celebrating the hard work and perseverance of local students. We’re also incredibly proud of Dave’s Transfer Scholars Brett Rule-Davis and Irvin Gonzalez, who completed their Bachelor’s degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno this spring! 🎉 Their accomplishments are a beautiful reflection of the dedication and determination we are honored to support through our scholarship programs.

We also loved catching up with John DeMaria on A.C.E. Arts, Culture and Entertainment on KMMT to share updates on what’s been happening at MLF and our scholarship opportunities for the upcoming fall semester.

And now, we’re looking ahead to one of our favorite evenings of the year — the Friends of the Foundation Dinner on June 20! We can’t wait to gather with students, supporters, and community partners to celebrate the lasting McCoy legacy and the power of education and community in the Eastern Sierra 💙https://www.mammothlakesfoundation.org/events

As our Bloom Together campaign continues, we are excited to share another story from our Dave’s Scholars community. 🌸

Many of you may remember hearing from Alwyne Butler at last year’s Friends of the Foundation Dinner. Since then, Alwyne has continued building her pathway toward a career in healthcare and is preparing to enter the Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program this fall.

In this video, Alwyne reflects on her journey at Cerro Coso and the impact the Mammoth Lakes Foundation and Dave’s Scholars program have had along the way.

"The Foundation's mission statement says they want to improve the quality of life of the people in the Eastern Sierra through education and opportunity. This scholarship is doing that for me! I don't know how to articulate that in all the ways, but I'm super grateful. I am becoming a nurse because of YOU!"

We invite you to explore the student fundraising pages to hear their personal stories and support them in a meaningful way. You can donate in honor of a specific student or give to the general campaign to uplift the entire program. https://givebutter.com/davesscholarsbloomtogether/

Our Dave’s Scholars community is coming together in a powerful way 💛🎓💐

For our Bloom Together campaign, alumni and current Dave’s Scholars are sharing their stories, their journeys, and the impact this program has had on their lives. It is a full circle moment that reflects what this community is all about: showing up for one another and paying it forward.

If you remember our video from last year, you may recall alumni from our very first graduating class, including Alisa Mokler Harper, who shared how this program began and the vision that started it all (https://fb.watch/GMUpt1DAM_/). Today, that vision is still growing through every student who is stepping up to give back.

We invite you to explore the student fundraising pages to hear their personal stories and support them in a meaningful way. You can donate in honor of a specific student or give to the general campaign to uplift the entire program. https://givebutter.com/davesscholarsbloomtogether

🌟Every gift helps expand opportunities for the next generation of Dave’s Scholars.

Stay tuned... More videos and student stories are coming soon!❤

🌼 This morning’s April Scholar Brunch focused on community, purpose, and the power of connection 💛

We were honored to welcome guest speaker Neal Fox of Sierra STEM, who shared his personal journey and offered thoughtful insights on building a community that reflects your values. He encouraged our Dave’s Scholars to actively explore mentorship, not only as mentees, but as future mentors, emphasizing the importance of showing up, giving back, and growing alongside others.

Through meaningful conversation and reflection, students considered how they can cultivate supportive networks that align with their goals and identities, both during their academic journey and beyond.

A heartfelt thank you to Neal for his authenticity, wisdom, and for inspiring our scholars to lead with intention and connection

As our final Scholar Brunch of the spring semester, we wish all of our students the very best as they finish out the last month of the 2026 academic year! ❤️

Rest in Peace, Gary McCoy 🕊
07.02.1942 – 04.08.2026 ❤

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our longtime friend and Executive Committee member, Gary McCoy.

As the eldest child of Dave and Roma, Gary has been a guiding presence for the Mammoth Lakes Foundation since our founding in 1989. He served as Board President for many years, and we are deeply grateful for his steady leadership and his dedication to carrying forward the McCoy legacy through our local scholarship programs.

We will miss him dearly, and we find comfort in imagining him carving endless turns in the sky with Dave and Roma.

After working as our Acting Executive Director for the last three months of the year, Elizabeth Root stepped into the Executive Director role as of January 1, 2026.

Elizabeth has played a key role in the development of the Dave’s Scholar program, championing its mentorship model and expanding student support beyond financial assistance alone. She joined MLF in 2019 as a part-time staff member and was hired full-time in 2021 as Scholarship Coordinator. She has developed professionally within the organization, working closely with students, donors, educators, and community partners across the Eastern Sierra. In addition to her leadership at MLF, Elizabeth brings broad nonprofit experience from her work with Access Mammoth (formerly Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra), where she supported volunteer coordination, fundraising, donor relations, and daily operations. Her dedication to community-based nonprofits, both as a professional and volunteer, has informed a practical, people-centered approach to leadership and collaboration she is eager to expand in her new role.

“It is an honor to continue growing alongside an organization and community that I care so deeply about,” Elizabeth shared. “I am grateful for the trust of the Board and for the opportunity to carry forward the legacy of Dave and Roma McCoy by expanding student support through education, mentorship, and meaningful community connection.”
