Episode 7 of the COAL + ICE podcast is available now. What role does science fiction play in helping us image what a future with climate change will look like, and how we might respond to it?

Abigail Washburn and Martha Redbone perform "Come All You Coal Miners,” a powerful ballad for workers rights written by the wife and daughter of a coal miner, Sarah Ogan Gunning. Before the song began, Martha Redbone shared with the audience: "My family is from Harlan County, Kentucky, and my grandfather was a coal miner and all my uncles. They mined out of Portal 31. And so we share very similar stories."

Performed as part of COAL + ICE: Musical Homage to the Earth, a collaborative evening of music featuring an extraordinary group of musicians, traversing traditions from classical to folk, driven by the urgency to defend life on our planet. Other musicians included Jiebing Chen, Sandeep Das, Renée Fleming, Hao Jiang Tian, and Béla Fleck.

David Breashears is an accomplished mountaineer, photographer, and filmmaker. He summited Mount Everest five times before turning his focus to the disappearing glaciers of the Greater Himalayan region. The largest projection at the center of COAL + ICE displays recent photographs by Breashears matched with photographs by early explorers of the region, to reveal the stark difference in glacial mass caused by climate change.

David Breashears stands in front of this projection screen as the 1909 image of the Karakoram by Vittorio Sella dissolves into a photograph by Breashears taken in 2009.

Visit COAL + ICE before it closes this week.
