🌲🍂 Trees of Change: How Pioneers Transformed the Port Oneida Woods 🍂🌲

Our next class is THIS SATURDAY, October 10th at 10 AM! (Registration is required, please head to our website for more information).

Join us for a scenic hike through the forests of Port Oneida as we explore how early settlers transformed the landscape from native forests into fields, pastures, and homesteads—and how the forest continued to shape everyday life.

🥾 We’ll follow the Bay View Trail, starting at the historic Port Oneida Schoolhouse, and make our way through a red pine plantation to the lookout. Along the way, we’ll stop to uncover the stories behind the trees, landscape, and people who helped shape Port Oneida.

🌲 We’ll explore:
• How settlers cleared forests for farming
• The challenges of Port Oneida’s sandy soils
• Plants brought by early settlers and how they changed the landscape
• How forests provided materials for homes, barns, fences, tools, and fuel
• Maple sugaring and other seasonal woodland resources
• Clues in today’s landscape that help us understand Port Oneida’s past

📍 Meet: Port Oneida Schoolhouse
🚗 Parking: Lot across from the schoolhouse/behind the Kelderhouse
💧 Bring: Water, walking poles if desired, and weather-appropriate clothing

Come ready to walk, learn, and enjoy the landscape!🍁🌲

We’d love to have you join us for a little forestry forensics in the woods!
