Tomorrow, Loudon Wainwright III turns 80. 🎂

Singer-songwriter, actor, author, humorist—and for more than half a century, a wonderfully wry observer of the strange business of being human.

“I’ve been writing about growing old for some time, really from the beginning of my career. It’s apparently something I’m hung up about, and now that I am old, hopefully I speak about it with some authority.”

A fitting thought as he approaches 80.

Throughout his career, Loudon Wainwright III has found humor, tenderness and truth in the passage of time, relationships, family and the everyday absurdities of life—often saying aloud the things the rest of us might only think.

Creativity runs deeply through the Wainwright family. Loudon’s father, Loudon Wainwright Jr., was a noted LIFE magazine writer, while another generation has carried that artistic tradition forward in their own distinctive ways, including Rufus Wainwright , Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche .

Jack Robinson photographed Loudon near the beginning of that remarkable career—decades before he could claim quite so much “authority” on the subject of growing old.

September 1 would have marked the 99th birthday of Wyatt Cooper — writer, actor, screenwriter, author, husband of Gloria Vanderbilt, and father of Carter and Anderson Cooper.
To remember him, we’re sharing a glimpse of the family he cherished.

Jack Robinson photographed Wyatt and Gloria with their young sons, Carter and Anderson, in 1972. Away from the public personas and famous names, these photographs capture something wonderfully personal: a family at home, relaxed, affectionate, and simply enjoying one another.

Wyatt had built a fascinating career of his own, from acting and Broadway to screenwriting and authorship. His 1975 book, Families: A Memoir and a Celebration, makes these photographs feel especially meaningful — family was not only part of his life, but a subject he thought and wrote deeply about.

Gloria would later speak about Wyatt as the great love of her life, while Anderson has often reflected on the profound influence his father had on him. Decades later, Anderson would name his own son Wyatt in his father’s honor.

Through Jack Robinson’s lens, we get to see a chapter of that family story preserved in time.

Before A Clockwork Orange, there was If....

August 30 marked the anniversary of the passing of filmmaker Lindsay Anderson, whose 1968 film If.... introduced audiences to a young Malcolm McDowell and began one of British cinema’s most distinctive director-actor collaborations.

In If...., McDowell played Mick Travis, a rebellious student pushing back against the rigid traditions and authority of an English boarding school. Provocative, surreal, and unmistakably of its era, the film captured the rebellious spirit of the late 1960s and went on to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

McDowell’s performance also caught the attention of Stanley Kubrick, who would soon cast him as Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

But If.... was only the beginning. Anderson and McDowell continued their collaboration with O Lucky Man! in 1973 and Britannia Hospital in 1982, with McDowell returning as Mick Travis in each film.

Jack Robinson photographed Lindsay Anderson on November 10, 1970, and also photographed Malcolm McDowell October 27, 1971, giving the Jack Robinson Archive a remarkable visual connection to both sides of this celebrated creative partnership.

As we remember Anderson this week, we also look back at the actor who helped bring his rebellious vision so memorably to the screen.

Remembering Seiji Ozawa on his birthday.

Born on September 1, 1935, Ozawa emerged from Japan to become one of the most celebrated conductors of his generation. He studied under legendary figures including Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein before going on to lead major orchestras around the world. In 1973, he became music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra — a position he would hold for an extraordinary 29 years, the longest tenure in the orchestra’s history.

Ozawa was known not only for his musicianship, but for an expressive, unmistakable presence on the podium and a career that helped bring classical music across cultural and geographic boundaries.

Jack Robinson photographed Ozawa during the years when his international reputation was taking shape, preserving a portrait of a man whose story extends far beyond the frame.

On his birthday, we invite you to look a little closer — and perhaps listen, too.

In 1959, Nina Simone released her debut album, Little Girl Blue, introducing the world to a voice and musical presence unlike any other.

Classically trained and impossible to confine to a single genre, Simone brought together jazz, blues, gospel, folk and classical influences with an intensity entirely her own. By the end of the following decade, she had also become one of the defining artistic voices of the Civil Rights era.

Jack Robinson photographed Nina Simone in October 1969, capturing the unmistakable presence of an artist who never simply performed a song — she inhabited it.

Today, we celebrate the extraordinary Nina Simone and a legacy that continues to resonate.

There’s something about Elliott Gould that has always felt a little different.

Funny without trying too hard, effortlessly cool, intelligent, and wonderfully unpredictable, Gould became one of the most distinctive screen presences to emerge from Hollywood in the late 1960s and ’70s. From Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and MASH* to The Long Goodbye, he built a career playing characters who rarely felt polished or conventional — and that was exactly the appeal.

Tomorrow, August 29, we celebrate Elliott Gould on his birthday with this portrait by Jack Robinson.

If you only know him from his later appearances in films like Ocean’s Eleven — or don’t know him at all — his earlier work is well worth discovering.

On this day, we remember Julie Harris, one of the great actresses of the American stage.

Across a career spanning more than six decades, Harris brought remarkable depth and sensitivity to roles ranging from Sally Bowles in I Am a Camera and Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst to Abra in East of Eden. Her extraordinary work earned her five Tony Awards and a lasting place in American theater history.

Jack Robinson photographed Harris around 1970, capturing the quiet presence and expressiveness that defined so much of her work.

Remembering Julie Harris, who passed away on August 24, 2013, at the age of 87.
