October 29th. Join us for a unique listening session celebrating the life and work of Memphis’ own Jon Hassell. A trumpet player, composer and musical conceptualist, Jon Hassell’s career bisects a multitude of strands in the history of the avant-garde and the development of genuinely new forms of music. Having studied under Karl-Heinz Stockhausen in Cologne (alongside future members of the band Can), he played on the original recording of Terry Riley’s In C (1968), was part of La Monte Young’s Theatre Of Eternal Music and studied Kiranic singing with Pandit Pran Nath, all of which informed his own instrumental technique and treatment of the trumpet with various electronic effects. In 2018 the Ndeya label was set up by Jon in partnership with Warp Records as a home for his music. In the same year he released his first album in nine years, the widely acclaimed Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume One). This was followed by his final studio album: Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two) in 2020. Both albums are a remarkable curtain call from a true auteur, and regarded by fans and critics alike as a high watermark in what was already an astounding musical career. This series of albums is completed by Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three). Hosted by Jared Boyd, and presented by Ndeya in partnership with Memphis Listening Lab.

Bob Beatty, PhD and Jeff Kollath, historians

On September 17, 1971, Duane Allman played one of his final shows in the South at Mid-South Coliseum. They arrived in Memphis on a high. At Fillmore East was burning up the charts. Six weeks later it all came crashing down. Just as the album reached Gold, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. Join historians Jeff Kollath and Bob Beatty, author of Play All Night! Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East, for a wide ranging conversation on the original band’s last year together, the final tour, and the legacy of Duane Allman

The Long Play #004: The Cure — Disintegration.

“I’ve never done it before, but on this album I was trying to imagine people listening to it.”

That was Robert Smith talking about Disintegration in 1989. He described it as a “bigger-sounding record” and said he wanted to take listeners aback with its intensity.

More than 35 years later, it still does.

Dark, romantic, atmospheric and enormous, Disintegration is built around mood and texture as much as individual songs. It’s also a record that comes alive on a great system — layers of guitars and synthesizers stretch across the room, the bass reaches surprisingly deep, and the sheer scale of the recording becomes part of the experience.

For The Long Play #004, we’ll hear Disintegration the way this series was made for: the complete album, on vinyl, uninterrupted, in the Sound Room.
