Ever wonder what goes into restoring a historic mansion?

Join us on Wednesday, June 24, for Mansion After Hours: Conservation Conversation at The Barker Mansion. This special behind-the-scenes experience features Chris Grohs of Terrawood Design & Custom Wood Craft the skilled craftsman responsible for much of the Mansion's recent restoration work.

This interactive Q&A-style tour invites guests to ask questions, explore restoration techniques, and learn about the challenges, discoveries, and craftsmanship uncovered during five years of hands-on preservation work.

Come curious—this is your chance to experience preservation in action!

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for one of the mansion's most important weekly rituals: winding the grandfather clock!

In the Victorian era, keeping time was serious business. Before smartphones, wristwatches, and alarm clocks, families relied on clocks like this one to keep daily life running on schedule. But these beautiful timepieces didn't run on their own, they needed, and still need, regular winding to keep their pendulums swinging and their chimes ringing.

Each Wednesday, we give our grandfather clock a few careful turns, much like its caretakers would have done over a century ago. It's a small task that helps keep us on task throughout the week.

Listen closely during your next visit, you might just hear the same chime that echoed through these halls when the Barkers were here!

Did you guess it?!

This curious object is a compact travel hanger! 🧳

Designed for travelers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these ingenious hangers folded into a compact size for easy packing inside a suitcase or travel trunk. Once you reached your destination, the hanger expanded to full size, allowing you to neatly hang coats, dresses, or suits and help prevent wrinkles.

As travel by rail and steamship became more common during the Gilded Age, clever space-saving accessories like this became increasingly popular. For families like the Barkers, who frequently traveled for business and pleasure, practical items like this made life on the road a little more comfortable.

Sometimes the smallest objects tell the biggest stories about everyday life in the past!
