It reflects a rich history in the area of Southeastern Massachusetts, where it calls home. This is where the Pilgrims strove to gain a foothold of religious freedom in a New World and where an ancient and noble people fought and eventually suffered against their encroachment. True Grit embodies the landscape of the area, peppered with old factories, triple-deckers, and their salty, resourceful, in

habitants. True Grit is echoed in the cheers of die-hard New England sports fans who had long agonized in their quest for glory and in most recent years, have seen their undying loyalty richly rewarded. In most simple terms, True Grit reflects the New England spirit and True Grit Art Gallery seeks to showcase that spirit in the form of artistic expression. It takes grit and determination to be an artist and we hope to gratify our patrons with a rich appreciation of that endeavor.

Weโ€™re excited to feature this beautiful 11.5" x 8.5" original watercolor painting by Peggy Call-Conley (matted, preserved under glass, and framed โ€” overall size 15.25" x 11.25"). Painted in 2024 at Oliver Mill Park along the Nemasket River in Middleboro, likely during our annual Nemasket Plein Air Festival.

In this serene composition, fallen autumn leaves drift and gather on the dark, reflective surface of the river. Peggy masterfully uses complementary colors โ€” rich, deep blues contrasted with glowing yellows and greens, warm oranges, and soft pinks โ€” creating a vibrant yet peaceful visual symphony. The loose, confident watercolor washes and delicate details give the piece wonderful movement and texture while maintaining an overall sense of profound calm and quiet beauty. Iโ€™m pleased to share this 12" x 12" original oil painting on canvas board, presented in a handmade walnut frame with corner splines.

Painted in 2023, this piece depicts the pair of bay windows jutting from a rambling multi-family apartment house in Brockton, MA. What draws me to subjects like this is the rich interplay between formal abstraction and everyday reality. The painting explores the pictorial balance of shapes, colors, lines, and textures โ€” the soft, organic forms of the tree and clouds contrasting beautifully with the rational geometry of the buildings. Iโ€™m especially fascinated by the way negative space, overlapping planes, and deep shadow values create a compelling sense of depth and mystery.

Thereโ€™s something quietly profound in these ordinary urban scenes โ€” how the arrangement of forms can delight the mind and invite prolonged looking.
The painting becomes less about the building itself and more about how we perceive space, light, and structure in the world around us.

This show features the work of four talented Plymouth artists: Lorraine Agri, Mary Jo Beswick, Nora Cannon, and Helene Zaniboni.

In 2025, Lorraine Agri formed a small, supportive creative community of self-motivated artists who began meeting regularly in her home studio. What started as a desire to share knowledge and stretch themselves as artists quickly grew into a shared passion for the art of collage.

This exhibition offers a wonderful glimpse into their collective creativity.
