Fine Art in Southeastern Massachusetts True Grit encompasses a drive; a passion to create.

It reflects a rich history in the area of Southeastern Massachusetts, where it calls home. This is where the Pilgrims strove to gain a foothold of religious freedom in a New World and where an ancient and noble people fought and eventually suffered against their encroachment. True Grit embodies the landscape of the area, peppered with old factories, triple-deckers, and their salty, resourceful, inhabitants. True Grit is echoed in the cheers of die-hard New England sports fans who had long agonized in their quest for glory and in most recent years, have seen their undying loyalty richly rewarded. In most simple terms, True Grit reflects the New England spirit and True Grit Art Gallery seeks to showcase that spirit in the form of artistic expression. It takes grit and determination to be an artist and we hope to gratify our patrons with a rich appreciation of that endeavor.

📣We’re thrilled to announce that longtime True Grit Art Gallery artist Michael Evans will be the sole juror for this year’s Nemasket Plein Air Festival! 🎨

Born in Rome, NY, and raised on a farm just north of the city, Michael showed early talent—winning a Gold Key award for Scholastic Achievement in Art while still in high school. After earning his BS in Education and moving to the Boston area, he deepened his practice through classes at the Attleboro Arts Museum (where he later served on the Board of Trustees), studies with Colleen Vandeventer, workshops at the Lyme Art Association, and time with Monique Martin-Courcy in Quebec.

Michael works in oil and soft pastel—mediums he loves for their rich color and tactile beauty. His eye for light, color, and place makes him the perfect person to evaluate this year’s plein air work.

He’ll judge submissions on artistic merit, creativity, and how well they capture the spirit of Middleborough in autumn, selecting:

🥇 1st Place – $300 + ribbon
🥈 2nd Place – $150 + ribbon
🥉 3rd Place – $100 + ribbon
🏅 Two Honorable Mentions

Thank you, Michael, for lending your talent and experience to the festival. We can’t wait to see which pieces rise to the top!

🎃It’s Halloween season, so we’re especially hoping to hear spooky poems — pieces about ghosts, death, loss, the afterlife, or anything that belongs to the dark end of October. Other work is welcome too. All experience levels. Each reader gets up to 5 minutes (1–3 poems).

Reserve a slot so we know you’re coming — it helps us plan the night. Walk-ins are welcome as time allows.

Sunlight falls across the wide floorboards of the Oliver House in Middleborough, Massachusetts. An open door. The shadow of a chair. Nothing else. The painting doesn’t announce itself — it simply holds a moment that feels both specific and strangely familiar, as if you’ve stood in a room like this before and can’t quite place when.

Ashley’s handling of the light is precise without being cold. Warm gold cuts across deep brown planks, the edges of the shadow soft where the sun meets worn wood. The antique frame doesn’t just contain the image; it feels like part of the architecture, another layer of age and use. What remains is less a scene than a pause — a small meditation on presence, absence, and the way certain rooms keep a trace of the people who moved through them.

Fragments is full of these kinds of moments. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. ❤️

Thank you so much to everyone who came out for the opening reception of L.E. Ashley’s 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 this past Saturday. The gallery was full of warmth, conversation, and real appreciation for Lori’s work — and we’re so grateful to those of you who purchased one of Lori’s beautiful assemblages. It means everything to see her art find its way to people who feel it.

If you missed the opening, there’s still plenty of time to experience this show in person. 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟰.

These small, quiet moments — weathered surfaces, slivers of sky, pieces of home and memory — hit differently when you see them up close.

All of the work from the exhibition is now available for purchase in our online store 👉https://www.truegritartgallery.com/fragmentsmdash-le-ashley.html

We’d love to see you at the gallery before the show comes down.

Lori has been part of the True Grit family for years, and every time she shows, her work feels even more personal and alive. Fragments is about those small, unforgettable moments that stop you in your tracks — a weathered rooftop, a sliver of sky, a texture that pulls you back to a place you thought you’d forgotten— See more: https://www.truegritartgallery.com/news--events

Through oil paintings and vintage assemblages, she captures the quiet beauty of memory, home, and time passing.
