A look back at Adult Camp! ✏️

Our Adult Camps are a chance to spend two days exploring, creating, and learning alongside other curious and creative people.

This year’s campers came from near and far, including Los Angeles, Madison, Ann Arbor, Lansing, and right here in Midland. Highlights included a special tour of the Kendall Residence, canoeing around the Home & Studio, exploring the Archives, watching some of Alden B. Dow’s films, and plenty of time to draw, write, create, and enjoy the unique spaces throughout the home.

We had such a fun, curious, and engaged group this year. Thanks for joining us! 💛

A new way to explore the Alden B. Dow Archives is here! 🔎

We’re excited to launch our new online collections portal, powered by Argus. The portal expands access to the materials held in the Alden B. Dow Archives, allowing you to explore photographs, architectural drawings, artifacts, postcards, and more, including materials that are rarely on display.

Whether you’re researching Alden B. Dow or simply curious about what the Archives hold, there’s plenty to discover. And this is just the beginning! New materials will be added as the collection continues to grow.

Did you know Alden B. Dow was fascinated by the science of color? 🎨

Dow had a particular interest in color theory and the effects color can have on our mood. He also explored the idea of color fatigue and how our eyes respond when we spend too much time looking at one color.

Color was more than just decoration for Dow. It was something to observe, experiment with, and understand, and that curiosity can be seen throughout the Home & Studio.

Spend an afternoon on Belle Isle exploring sculpture, design, and play!

Our friends at Docomomo Michigan are hosting Tour Day 2026, with a closer look at the work of Marshall Fredericks and Jim Miller-Melberg. Check out their post below for more details!

Docomomo Michigan is pleased to announce our Tour Day event: Sculptures for Play: Belle Isle, Marshall Fredericks, and Jim Miller-Melberg

Tour Day 2026 explores “Recreation and Play” as its national theme, and Belle Isle offers Detroit’s case study: two twentieth-century sculptors who built play into the island’s public landscape.

Join Docomomo Michigan on Belle Isle for an afternoon exploring the work of Marshall Fredericks and Jim Miller-Melberg.

We are thrilled to present our featured speakers: Scott Hocking and Megan McAdow, with an introduction by Belle Isle Conservatory President Meagan Elliott.

Megan McAdow will highlight sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks, known for monumental public commissions— including Detroit’s Spirit of Detroit. His practice also produced a body of work marked by humor and an interest in animals, children, and interactive subjects.

McAdow draws on family accounts, archival research, and unrealized commissions to examine the lighter, more personal register of Fredericks’s career: the sculptures Detroiters have long climbed, touched, and made part of their own experience of public space— including his work on Belle Isle and at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids.

Detroit-based artist Scott Hocking will discuss the play sculptures of Jim Miller-Melberg on Belle Isle. Hocking, a sixth-generation Detroiter who has worked in the city since 1996, is known for site-specific installations and public artworks that draw on found materials, neglected sites, and deep research into a location’s history.
