Garden Glow would not be the same without the hands that help bring it to life, and we would love for yours to be one of them. 🎃 There are so many ways to get involved this year:

Join our Volunteer Pumpkin Carving Workshop on October 12, 13, or 16. We provide the pumpkins, patterns, and tools, you bring the creativity. Register on Volunteer Hub here: https://loom.ly/JkAqDCA and if you run into any trouble seeing the shifts, reach out to Caroline Graf at [email protected].

Add to our display by carving your own pumpkin or creating an illuminated glow sculpture. Thanks to a generous donation of 800 pumpkins from Klein's ShopRite, there is one waiting for you at Ladew. Contact Caroline at [email protected] for pumpkin pick-up details.

Feeling ambitious? Carve one of our giant pumpkins by reaching out to Halle von Kessler at [email protected].

However you choose to join in, we cannot wait to see what you create. ✨

Go behind the canvas with our 2026 Artist-in-Residence 🎨 Join us Thursday, September 24 at 10:30 AM (refreshments at 10 for in-person guests) for a lecture with Jed Smalley: "The Process and Story Behind the Art."

Jed will walk us through his artistic process, from a BFA at Parsons to an MFA from Yale, surrounded by a collection of his own work. For the past fourteen years, he's used landscape as a scaffold for abstract paintings, dripped from varied heights onto canvas and wood. His show will be on display around the lecture, with pieces available for purchase.

Join us in person or virtually. https://loom.ly/CgtH5AQ

Some days call for quiet. For wandering paths with no destination in mind, pausing under the shade of an old tree, and letting the world outside the gate fall away. That's what Ladew is for.

"Why is the topiary so shaggy?" is a question that we get asked far too often! Our senior horticulturalist Abby Evans is here to explain the differences between our 3 main topiary on Ladew's grounds: Hemlock, Taxus (Yew), and Privet. Our horticulturalists start shearing in May and continue through October or early November. Different topiary has different needs, and is sheared different times of the year. We have over 100 topiaries and 3 miles of hedges to lovingly maintain. We estimate that our team spends about 910 hours of shearing per year, per person. 600 of those hours are on ladders, and 168 hours are on a lift!
