As Memorial Day approaches, we pause to remember those who served—and those who gave their lives for our country. 🇺🇸

Here in Wayne County, their stories are not forgotten.

Inside the Genealogy Library, we are proud to preserve records of local veterans spanning generations—from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Names and service are carefully documented, helping ensure their legacy lives on.

These aren’t just records.
They are fathers, sons, brothers, neighbors—people who once walked the same roads we do today.

If you have a family member who served, we invite you to come explore these records, learn their story, and remember their place in our community’s history. We would also love to hear your stories!

Because behind every name is a life of service… and a story worth honoring. 🇺🇸

Trying to trace your family tree?

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the ancestors who actually answered the door for the census taker. 👏

…and gently side-eye the ones who didn’t.

Those records can tell us who lived where, who they lived with, and sometimes even what they did for a living.

👉 Moral of the story: fill out your census… your future relatives will thank you.

And if you’re curious what your ancestors did leave behind, come see us at the Genealogy Library.

Because your story is part of Wayne County’s story.

Your family history might already be sitting in your home.

Old photos. Letters. A family Bible.

Sometimes the biggest discoveries aren’t found in archives… they’re found in a drawer.

But if you've run out old drawers to go through stop by the Genealogy Library and see if we have any information you haven't discovered yet. 😀

I've attached some pictures of some of my favorite people and would love to see some of yours! If you want to drop some pictures in the comments. Maybe we're related and don't know it yet! 😀

Did you know… in small communities like ours, many families are connected in ways you might not expect?

That neighbor down the road… could be distant kin.

In Wayne County, certain family names appear again and again in early records—meaning your roots may run deeper here than you realize.

Stop by the Genealogy Library and start your search! I'm currently searching to see if I'm related to Wayne County's very own frontiersman, Michael Stoner. It would only make sense that I am since I am so frontiersy😂. I'm not sure that's a word!😂

🌷 Mother’s Day at the Museum 🌷

Behind every family tree is a mother who remembered everybody’s business before genealogy websites ever existed.

She knew who married who, who moved off, who “wasn’t from around here,” and somehow kept track of every birthday, reunion, and cousin twice removed. 😄

This Mother’s Day, we’d like to wish a happy Mother’s Day to the moms, grandmas, and great-grandmas who preserved family stories long before museums and history books did. ❤️

And let’s be honest… half the exhibits in small-town museums probably survived because somebody’s mother said:
“You are NOT throwing that away.” 😂

Happy Mother’s Day from the Wayne County/Monticello Museum 🌸
