Art conservation isn't always glamorous, but it's essential and fascinating to watch in action.
To protect our non-ferrous metal sculptures (including bronze, aluminum, lead, and pewter) from the effects of weather and moisture pe*******on, a thin wax layer is carefully applied and gently heated. This allows the wax to seep into the pores, creating a protective barrier that helps preserve the sculpture and safeguard it for future generations. Some sculptures need more attention than others, so the number of times this takes place per year varies with the sculptures.
This work is often times performed by one of our dedicated volunteers, Don, a former Brookgreen employee whose years of experience make him uniquely qualified to care for our nationally significant sculpture collection.
It is just one example of the expertise and stewardship that goes into preserving the art entrusted to Brookgreen Gardens every day. You might just get lucky enough to see this take place in the Gardens on your next visit.
