🌼WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF PINKSTER?🌼
Pinkster is a Dutch holiday marking the day of Pentecost in the Catholic church. For enslaved people's, it was a day of rest and a day to practice their individual cultures and traditions. In the late 18th century, Pinkster became known as an African celebration mostly in Dutch settled areas throughout the Hudson River Valley where they settled during the 1620s. Pinkster is now known to be a celebration of the diverse traditional African cultural arts in the Americas and a commemoration of the resistance and resilience of African people.

Our first in person Farmhouse Family Day of 2026 was a lovely time! Urban Park Rangers did an excellent workshop talking about indigenous foodways in New York and we made our own succotash in a squash! We put hominy, kidney beans, and pemmican in it. We also practiced grinding corn on rocks and churning our own butter! We cooked some sunchokes and popped some popcorn as well😊

Participants also enjoyed making some mosaics out of beans and our very own Beanie made an appearance as well! It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday 🫘 thanks SO much to Rangers Rob, Ryan, and Laura for coming by!

Stay tuned for updates about our March Family Day!
