The Naval War College Museum interprets the history of the Navy in Narragansett Bay. Permanent exhibits interpret naval activities in the region from the colonial period through the Civil War and also focus on the Naval Torpedo Station, the Naval Training Station, and the Naval War College. A naval art gallery and temporary exhibit space offer changing exhibits on various subjects.

The Battle of Iwo Jima started in 1945, and it was the first action in WWII where the Navy used Navy nurses to evacuate Marines by air.

The Army had been using flight nurses since February 1943, but the Navy didn't create a flight nurse program until later in 1944.

Iwo Jima was their first engagement, and the Navy nurses then went on to serve at the battle of Okinowa. They evacuated 2,300 Marines, landing on the beaches on day 8 of the battle. Miraculously, none of them were injured or killed, and they became known as the Angels of the Airfields.
