Dedicated to preserving the people, places, and stories that shaped East Alabama. Join us in celebrating our shared heritage.

Located in the heart of Opelika’s downtown historic district at 121 South 9th Street, on the old Clement hotel site, the Museum of East Alabama first opened its doors in August 1989. Adjacent to the Lee County Courthouse square, the museum now houses over 5,000 artifacts including both 19th, and 20th century local, state and general history items. With over 2,000 visitors yearly since its opening, hundred of visitors receive a look and education about the East Alabama area, Opelika, and Alabama history. Museum Hours:

Saturday: 2pm - 4pm

Step back in time as we wander the historic streets of downtown Opelika, uncovering forgotten history, local legends, and ghostly tales hiding in plain sight. 🕯️

Hey East Alabama!

Come join the Museum of East Alabama for our weekly Lantern Lore Tours on October 22, 2026! Tickets are $20 and include 6 folklore and legends. We will have our first walk-through at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm.

🍂🏮 Hey, East Alabama! We’re cooking up something FUN for fall! 🏮🍂
The Museum of East Alabama and Opelika Main Street are getting ready for the Lantern Lore Tour of Downtown Opelika, and we need VOLUNTEERS to help bring the stories, legends, and lore of downtown to life!
Whether you love local history, enjoy meeting new people, or just want to be part of a fun fall event, now is the perfect time to get involved with one of our fall fundraisers!
We’re looking for volunteers to help with tour leading, crowd control, and check-in on October 15, 22, and 29. There are two shifts available each night: 4:30–6:30 PM and 7:30–9:30 PM.
