Before joining the groundbreaking SEALAB program, Scott Carpenter had already made history as one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts, becoming the second American to orbit the Earth aboard Aurora 7 in 1962.

Carpenter was involved with all three SEALAB projects, helping bridge the worlds of space and undersea exploration. While he contributed to SEALAB I, II, and III, SEALAB II was the only habitat in which he actually lived and worked underwater. In 1965, Carpenter spent 30 days on the ocean floor, setting a new record for underwater habitation and proving that humans could successfully live and work in a saturated environment for extended periods.
