Topics include the history of sea shanties, the musical instruments of coastal communities, and traditions meant to ensure safe and successful fishing expeditions. Then voyage upstairs on a gallery getaway tour to see related exhibits.

In April, the MIM Music Theater welcomed Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary. 🎶

End-blown notched flutes have been featured in Chinese court music since antiquity. Dongxiao are typically made of bamboo, but a handful—such as the one on display in our current special exhibition, The Magical Flute: Beauty, Enchantment, and Power—were crafted with white porcelain for aesthetic appeal. White porcelain dongxiao are uncommon because of the material’s instability in kiln, which makes this dongxiao a rare in-tune example.

Hear Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu, our curator for Asia and Oceania, demonstrate the beautiful sound of this exquisite late 18th-century flute.
