HISTORY MATTERS: REVOLUTION, INDEPENDENCE AND VALCOUR ISLAND
With John Krueger - 6pm - June 25, 2026 - Plattsburgh Memorial Chapel

History matters because liberty is not self-sustaining; it must first be imagined in the minds and hearts of ordinary people and then defended through sacrifice, leadership, and endurance. Using figures such as John and Abigail Adams, Joseph Warren, and William Emerson, this engaging illustrated presentation will explain how the American Revolution grew from conviction into action, while the Declaration of Independence gave that struggle its clearest moral and political purpose. Its central regional argument is that Valcour Island deserves lasting historical importance because Benedict Arnold’s improvised naval stand on Lake Champlain delayed the British advance long enough to preserve the northern defenses and help make Saratoga possible. A familiar story will be told in an unfamiliar manner, something you won’t want to miss.

The talk is free and open to the public - donations to the Chapel are appreciated.

John Krueger will also give a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Plattsburgh Veterans Park on the Oval on July 3rd at 10 am.

COMING UP ON JUNE 20th

The Adirondack Coast Cultural Alliance (ACCA) hosts the 17th Annual Museum Day throughout Historic Clinton County on 20 June 2026, inviting visitors and residents to “be a tourist in your own backyard” and explore the area’s wealth of museums, galleries, and cultural organizations. For one day participating locations will offer demonstrations, tours, exhibits, hands-on activities, and more. Admission fees will vary from venue to venue. Area museums rely on generous donors to survive and promote our rich history.

Each museum has a unique story to tell and most operate with only volunteers. Museums are only possible because of the dedicated staff and volunteers at each venue. Please take some time to support our local history on Museum Day and throughout the summer. Check the Adirondack Coast Arts & History Guide for more details. The Guide is available at all venues and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau (North Country Chamber of Commerce) located at 7061 US Rt. 9 in Plattsburgh, open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Patricia "Pat" Loughan is a retired history teacher and local historian in Clinton County. She is widely recognized for her extensive work preserving and teaching the history of the local area and presently serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the historic Kent-Delord House Museum.
She is considered a leading expert on notable regional historical figures, leading lectures such as "Stories of Amazing Women" and "The Life and Times of Fannie Delord Hall," which explore local movements for social change and early temperance crusades.
Pat has been quoted as saying, “People have to know where they came from to know who they are and where they are going.”

Museum Day in Clinton County, NY will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 ~ 11am to 3pm
Coordinated by the Adirondack Coast Cultural Alliance and the Clinton County Historical Association.
This highly anticipated county-wide event offers free or reduced admission to over a dozen local historic sites, museums, and galleries from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The region's museums and cultural centers are hosting special programming for 2026 to celebrate both Museum Day and the nation's 250th anniversary.

CCHA'S JUNE EVENTS

Saturday, June 6th – 10:30 am, Town of Clinton Town Hall, 23 Smith Street, Churubusco. Churubusco and the 1837 Rebellion with Town of Clinton Historian Rebecca Le Clair. Join us to discuss the demographics of the Town of Clinton (Churubusco). This presentation will reveal why the Churubusco populus is primarily French Canadian and Irish by delving into the history or settlement in Churubusco and how it ties into the Canadian rebellion of 1837.

Saturday, June 6th, 11 am - Flag Ceremony beginning at Point au Fer with American Legion Post 912 and Post 1619’s Revolutionary War Honor Guard to honor Revolutionary War Veterans interred in cemeteries in the Town of Champlain: Point au Fer, Maple Hill, Glenwood, Shutes, Waters and Wiley’s Point.

Monday, June 8th – 6 pm, American Legion, 29 Pratt St., Rouses Point. Struggle in the Snow: The invasion and storming of Quebec with Thaddeus Booth Trudo. New Year’s Eve 2025 was the 250th Anniversary of the attempted storming of Quebec City by American forces under the command of Generals Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold. Learn more about this event and the brave patriots who participate in this early revolutionary war battle.

Should be an interesting evening -

TOMORROW NIGHT - TWO GREAT SPEAKERS
Thursday - May 28th, 6 pm, Plattsburgh Memorial Chapel, Old Base, Plattsburgh, First Adirondackers: 12,000 Years of Indigenous Peoples in the Adirondack Uplands with Curt Stager and David Kanietakeron Fadden. The newly released book by Curt Stager and David Kanietakeron Fadden “challenges the widespread, long-standing belief that the Adirondack uplands of northern New York were uninhabited before the arrival of European colonizers. Through local indigenous traditions and supporting findings by natural science, authors Fadden and Stager expose, document, and honor the long human presence in the Adirondacks, helping not only to redefine what it means to be an Adirondacker, but also contributing to a more complete understanding of America itself.” We will be privileged to have both authors at this presentation. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and hear reflections on the extensive research Curt and Dave did in order to provide us with this book.

HISTORY DAY AT THE CHAMPLAIN MALL - MAY 16th
We have 17 tables - Kent Delord, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Centennial, North Country Underground Railroad, John Brown Farm, County Historian, Lyon Mountain Mining and Railroad Museum, Miner Institute, Heart's Delight, The Alice, Literacy Volunteers, Friends of Point au Roche, Battle of Plattsburgh, Sherman Library, Crown Point Historic Site, Assemblyman Cashman, Peru Town Historian, Clinton County Historical Association, America250 and Adirondack Coast Cultural Alliance.

There will be a couple of quizzes, many handouts, stickers, a couple of take away crafts, T-shirts and Challenge Coins for sale and our brand new hot off the press 2026 Arts and History Passport.

The coins are $20 and a fundraiser for CCHA and the Battle of Plattsburgh. Passport and coins are available at CCHA. The coins at CCHA are a fundraiser for us and the coins for BOP will be available at their event and from their volunteers.
