Watercolor studies with our apprentice!

I don't know how to caption this. My heart says "spill the deets about how awesome today was."

This is a piece of watercolor paper where I was practicing value with spit shading. Truth is, value is a weak point for me. I tend to overshade away the negative space and can't control my scale very well. You can see the proof on the paper - I haven't managed to leave much blank space/white on each attempt yet.

Spit shading is exactly what it sounds like. Basically I'm not using water, I'm sticking the paintbrush straight in my mouth. I read all sorts of opinions on spit shading ranging from "I don't care what other people do" to "Ewwww that's so gross."

IS it gross? Uh, maybe inherently? Idk. But I wasn't bothered so... you shouldn't care 😆 I feel like as long as your mouth is clean and you're hydrated, you can mitigate the body horror. Tattoo artists have been spit shading since the days of fken yore, it's very traditional and I was weirdly eager to try it.

And then I just played around.

Also today was, in fact, a vibe. It was pouring rain but the studio was cozy and I grabbed myself a hot tea and we just sat and I had basically my first actual guidance with watercolors.

I take back all s**t I've ever talked about watercolors. They're so awesome.
