Join us for an intriguing presentation as part of our High Noon Zoom series on Thursday, November 19, 2026, at 12 PM.

We are excited to welcome historian Glen Whorton as our guest speaker. He will explore the often-overlooked History of the Nevada State Prison, a significant yet underrated chapter in Nevada’s past. During his talk, Whorton will examine the 150-year legacy of this institution and reveal the connections between the state’s criminal and political narratives and the prison itself.

On Saturday, November 7, 2027, from 1 to 2:30 pm, you will learn about the fascinating history, "Refining the Story of Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti: A Tale of Bonanza Argentiferous Ore or Barren Tails" by Richard Dorman, historian and geologist.

This presentation explores the fascinating story of Josie Reed Ames Pearl Rasmussen Moreasti, an early woman storyteller, prospector, and one of Nevada’s most colorful figures, remembered as the “Queen of the Black Rock Desert.” We would like to thank our community partner, Sierra View Library, for hosting this free series at 4001 S. Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada 89502.

Guest speakers, Nevada State Librarian and Administrator, Mike Strom, and State Archivist Cyndi Shein will discuss the history of the Nevada State Library and Archives’ role in preserving Nevada’s historical and contemporary state collections. They will explain how to access Nevada’s rare historical materials in person and online resources, discuss their Talking Book Services, and talk about the support NSLA provides for local libraries in Nevada.

Make sure to register for this Zoom lecture hosted by our community partner, Washoe County Library.

We are excited to announce that the 2026 Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Award Gold Winner is NHS educational docent Barbara Weinberg.

Barbara Weinberg has spent more than fifty years strengthening Northern Nevada through advocacy, education, philanthropy, & community service.

Her lifelong involvement has included leadership with the American Association of University Women, advocacy for the Equal Rights Amendment & Title IX, service with the Nevada Historical Society, & work as a Master Gardener bringing gardening education into Washoe County classrooms.
